I forgot to apply for cal grant...

Hello,
I'm a transfer student in hopes of attending USC in the fall.
I had a question,
if I missed the deadline for the cal grant, will that jeopardize the aid that i will receive from usc?...
i dont think my parents will be able to make up for the missing 10k from the cal grant...

has this happened to anyone?
thank you

Do you mean that you did not submit the FAFSA before March 2nd?

If so, then you will not receive a Cal Grant.

If, based on your income and assets, *you would have been *eligible for a Cal Grant simply by applying on time then USC will not replace the Cal Grant with their own funds. The Cal Grant is not awarded by USC, it is awarded by The California Student Aid Commission, and I have never heard of them making exceptions for late applications. USC has no say in whether you get a Cal Grant.

You have your location listed as “UCD '14.” Are you receiving a Cal Grant at UCD?

From your past posts it appears you are receiving Cal Grant at UCD. Did you submit your FAFSA by March 2nd listing UCD to continue to receive your Cal Grant? I don’t know how other schools handle it, but I know that USC sends a reminder to all continuing students so they do not miss that deadline.

I am hoping to hear that you submitted the FAFSA on time (by March 2nd), but just did not list USC on the FAFSA - that would be very good news. If that is the case, just add USC to your FAFSA now and you will do a school change when you decide where you will attend next year.

If it is the worst-case scenario that you did not submit your FAFSA by March 2nd for any school, you will not receive the Cal Grant at UCD, either. I hope to hear that is not the case.

Good luck.

i’m sorry for the mix up,
this is not for me, it was for my friend who attends CCC and is transferring to USC in the fall.

he did submit his fafsa on time,
and did list USC on his fafsa.
does that increase our chances of receiving aid?
thank you for your help!

Did his community college submit his GPA to The California Student Aid Commission on or before March 2nd? What specifically do you mean when you say he “forgot” to apply, and what did he not submit by the deadline?

As mentioned above, USC financial aid and Cal Grant are two separate processes.

For USC financial aid he needs to submit the CSS/Profile, the FAFSA, and copies of parent and student tax returns - all of which should have been done by now. If he hasn’t done all of that, he should immediately.

For Cal Grant, he must have filed the FAFSA and his GPA (the cc usually does it - check with them) by March 2nd. If both were not done by the deadline, The California Student Aid Commission will not award a Cal Grant - there is nothing USC can do about it. In addition, he must be under both the income and asset ceilings to qualify.
