So im a junior in high school and im about to receive a D in AP Chem as my final grade. Its my first D ever. Will this greatly affect my chances of getting accepted into a CSU? Overall my grades are decent. I have a 3.8 gpa and a 1800 SAT so far.
Is your D included in the 3.8 GPA? If not, then I would calculate your CSU GPA to see how it is affected.

Have you met the minimum 2 year science requirement for the CSU’s with a grade of C or higher not including AP Chem? Do you plan to also apply to any UC’s which require 3 science classes?
I suggest you retake if possible the class this summer so the repeat grade will replace the D and help your CSU/UC GPA. If you have already fulfilled the science requirement with 2 other classes and you do not plan to retake the class, then you do not need to retake. Much will depend upon which CSU’s you plan to apply and which major and if you also plan to apply to any UC’s where a D will be an issue. The D will make you a less competitive applicant, so to ensure your chances at an acceptance to any school, it is better to retake even if you need to do it Senior year.

My D is included in the gpa. I’ve already met the 2 year science requirement with an A for both classes. I got a C first semester in AP chem. But this semester i was gone for about two weeks straight due to a family issue and when i got back, it was so difficult to catch up.
I’m not even planning to major in chemistry, or science in general.
Which Cal States are your targeting? Remember, 2 years of science is the minimum. Depending upon how competitive your intended major and target schools are, you might need more than the minimum to be get an acceptance. Any reason why you cannot retake this Summer or Senior year? At least you can show admissions that you are trying to replace the grade.
I was planning on Cal State Long Beach, Fullerton, or San Marcos. I wish i could retake Chemistry but my school doesn’t provide that. Also, ill be taking a science senior year, will that count towards the science requirements?
Both CSULB and CSUF are fairly competitive. I would check with your GC to make sure that you are OK with having the D on your transcript and will not have any issues in applying to these 2 schools. What is your intended major? Why can’t you retake AP Chem next year? I could understand, it may not be offerred in the summer, but I would really try to get that grade replaced at least by the end of Senior year.

Use that tool to calculate your CSU/UC GPA. Note - they include only academic (a-g) classes and only grades 10-11. For most kids, it is about 10 classes. Also note, you don’t get the bonus AP point for your D - so it really hurts.
If 3.8 is your CSU GPA and you’ve completed the a-g course list, you won’t have any trouble getting into your targeted schools. Even a 3.5 will put you in pretty good shape. It wouldn’t hurt to visit an admission counselor at your local CSU. They can help ease your mind about the process and help you make schedule adjustments for next year.
I’ve calculated it and it said that i have a 3.7 CSU gpa i hope i did it right.
