i got accepted early action to Northeastern, and received the 11,000 a year scholarship, but it confuses me as to how (i'm not complaining, i'm just curious) . it says the achievement award is for the top 25% of applicants.

i have a 3.0 gpa and 1290/1600 SAT. could that possibly be in the top 25 percent? because to me, it doesn't seem like it is.

My opinion, impression, whatever you want to call it. What I mean is my view is not based on anything I have been told by NEU, but I get the distinct feeling that they use predictive models provided by fairly sophisticated enrollment consultants that consider a host of factors in an attempt to predict "what it will take" to induce a particular student to enroll. That is also weighed against what they want, so an applicant from an underrepresented state may get more merit money than a kid from Massachusetts. That would explain why their awards appear random to us, but in fact they are not random at all, the awards are highly calculated.

you know, a lot of people over the last few years...(esp. last year) from my HS have chosen to enroll in northeastern...i have a feeling that might be one of the reasons why i got such a large merit scholarship from them, since they know that students from my HS are likely to enroll..so you're prob right, njres

i completely agree. i live 5 mins away by car, ranked 10 when i applied, ap classes the whole deal and i got the $10,000 excellence scholarship. i'm not complaining at all cuz thats a lot of money. i was just expecting more i guess? but it makes a lot of sense cuz 50+ people applied from my school so im sure theyre not jumping out of their seats to give us all crazy-good scholarships
