! Merit Scholarships !

Hi, I am a rising senior and am very interested in Northeastern! I visited it and I think it is a great school!

I was just wondering what qualifies a student for a merit scholarship?! What stats are generally needed?

I am just wondering because my family doesn't qualify for any need-based aid really and it would be much easier to afford college with a scholarship!

Also, if anybody has received anything from NEU would you be willing to post your stats and how much you received? Thanks!

btw i have ~2050 (retaking and taking the ACT) , top 15% of 250 students (VERY competitive hs), above average EC's, 5 AP's next year, 2 Bs frosh year and 1 B junior year but rest are As and I am applying EA. Do you think I have a chance of getting anything or no? Thanks:)

I could be getting honors program confused with merit scholarships (although the two obviously have some stuff in common), but I think they go strictly by SATs and GPA (and I’m guessing ACTs as well).

Definitely apply EA, that is really the key.

I got into the honors program and I got $14,000/yr. I think my GPA was pretty close to 4.0 and my SATs were 2230.

Hope that helps!

Here’s my experience with merit aid (I have two students at NEU, one a rising middler, one a rising sophomore)

Student #1: SAT’s 2080, GPA 3.98 uw/4.24 w, class rank 3/550. Received 16k deans, 7k legacy, honors program… College of Engineering.

Student #2: SAT’s 1980, GPA 3.89 uw/4.04 w, class rank 24/535. Received 9k deans. Did not get in to honors program. Bouve.

From what I can tell, the criteria is only getting tougher as NEU attempts to strengthen its academic standing. Much depends on demographics as well, and also what major you are applying to.

My Student #1 has often said that they would not receive the merit aid today that they did two year ago… just because NEU has become that much more competitive.

Hope this helps.

if you apply early action and don’t get into the honors program – appeal it. it is hard to find information on the process, but email someone about it. you will probably just need to send someone an email about your senior year. you have to remember that they don’t KNOW who the top 10% of applicants are yet during early action. if everyone who applies early action is smarter, then it will be harder to get into the honors program.
definitely apply early action, there is no reason not to. but remember, you can appeal both your merit scholarship and honors program status. you just have to find the information about how.

i had over a 4.1 (top 5% in class) and over a 2200 and i ended up with 16,000 a year.

^If you appeal merit aid, can they ever decrease it? I’m in honors program and I had a 2240, GPA of ~4.1 (UW… at least that’s what my counselor tried to tell me). I’m getting $14,000/yr and an extra $2,000 would be very helpful at this point :)

Hey. I thinnnnnnnnk I got a 2030… I should probably remember this. and about a 3.9 UW GPA

But yeah I got into Honors and got 14K a year. As far as honors goes you need to be in the top 10% and after that it’s all subjective. I had relatively low test scores but I had an insane amount of leadership stuff and community service. Really show yourself off.

Good luck next year!

^ Very interesting i had slightly lower GPA and higher SAT and did not get honors.

Honors is usually top 10 percent of your major so if you and the other poster aren’t in the same major the numbers don’t mean much.
