I got accepted into Union College with a Presidential Scholarship...Worth it? I also.

applied to their direct medical program. So obviously if i get into Union college's BS/MD, Im going. But if i don't, then should i still go to Union College as a back up? Is it well-reputed enough so that it will prepare me well for MCAT, med school in general?

Is it a good back up?

I also applied to Ivies (brown, yale, harvard, and upen) as well as Duke and 4-5 other BS/MD programs.
Penn State is my safety and im going to retake my SAT’s January 22nd for their presidential scholarship consideration (I talked w/ the director the Braddock scholarship and approved my doing so). So now that you have a good background about my colleges, is Union College a good backup?

I don’t think your question is logical. Medical School, of all schools, is about GPA and MCAT, and no as much about pedigree. The area where there may be discussion is what type of research opportunities will you be given at Union compared to other schools, and what sort of pre-med advising do they offer?

Other than the research/advising, just about any good school is adequate preparation to apply to med school. It’s all about your testing ability, both in class and on especially the MCAT.

YEs sorry for being illogical. I meant to say that will Union college give the research opprotunities and pre-med advising committee that’s good enough for med school?

Well you don’t really have any other backups besides Penn State unless you count the BS/MD schools. In that case, I would say Union is a solid backup, definitely a better school overall than Penn State, though not by much and the two are obviously very different.

Have you visited Union? If not I think you should be aware that it’s in one of the worst college cities I’ve encountered.

is everyone with the presidential scholarship given the same amount? and does it mean u got better chances for the program?

omg, bubbabubba, me too! (remember me from the drexel thread?)

btw my presidential scholarship was for 14k, so i dunno if its all the same. the way it was in the letter was so awkward… it said that it was 4,666 a trimester, meaning 14 for the whole year. for a good 10 minutes, i thought they had given me like 5k a year o_0

^ Are you in state or out of state?
Has anyone looked at the cost of union yet. It says 56K, is that for 1 year or for all 4 years? I think it makes sense for it to be for all 4 years (12k seems to be a cheaper, but reasonable price for college, but i fear that its per year. My jaw dropped when i realized that.

If its for 1 year though, well i dont know what to say. You’re paying 150 dollars per DAY to go to college. Worth it? I dont know anymore. Even if I get into the BS/MD/MBA, which i really had my heart set on (Seriously, whats cooler than BOTH an MD and an MBA), I dont know if I would go because of the cost.

Gosh dang it im in awe that any college would charge that much. Its a bit crazy. :(

^Well it’s a private school, so 12k per year is expecting a bit much. You can’t go anywhere for a total sticker price of 12k/year…

Check the website to find out exactly what is factored into their Cost of Attendance. It probably includes tuition, fees, housing, food, and books. It might also include personal expenses and transportation. And yes, this COA is for only one year.

You need to sit down with your parents (or whoever else is helping you pay for college) and talk with them about the money. 56k-14k=42k 42kx4=168k and that doesn’t account for costs going up each year. Do you have a plan for where all this money is going to come from?

oh damn. I was under the same illusion you guys were. I thought it was 56k/4years. My scholarship was 14k/year.

On the paper i received, it said TOTAL COST OF ATTENDANCE: 56,050. Now I don’t know about you but when I saw TOTAL, I interpreted that as for all four years. If not, then to put it bluntly, Im ****ed.

I thought the scholarship i received was a full ride. lol

Well, now you know! It will be the same for all schools. They work one year at a time, and each year it will be more expensive than the last.

ok then. **** Union.

@happymom - the 56k covers tuition and room and board. to be honest, its a bit frustrating because it is much harder to compare costs with other colleges… but i suppose you could subtract about 10k for room and board, and the 14k in scholarship money, leaving around 32k just for tuition. which is still expensive. but obviously more reasonable.

@bubbabubba - dont stress it  i think that when the albany acceptances come back, then you can truly compare the cost of union to other colleges. cuz a bs/mba/md program just might be worth it for the extra cash. who knows? for now, i would focus on getting scholarships to offest some of this money youll be spending next year.

sigh they emailed me this morning saying that they arent offering me an interview… rahh the albany app took so long! =[ oh well. good luck bubbabubba and whoever else is applying! :)

^^ really? , anyone get a call for an actaul interview yet?? im so confused, rpi hasnt given me the supplement, union hasnt sent anything about interview, and neither has drexel AHHHHH lol soooo slowww

If that price tag scares you, stick with SUNY. Unless you have low income and get into an Ivy (the most generous aid), then all private colleges will be just as unaffordable as Union.
