I got an email from Duke...

...saying that if i want an interview in my area i have to submit my supplement or common app by tomorrow. Here's the thing... I know the "Why Duke" essay for Trinity College is optional but i want to do it. I don't know if ill be able to get it in by tomorrow because with SATs being just this past saturday, and the past two weeks being filled with work, I just haven't had the time to do it.

So my question is might i still be able to get an interview if i handed in my supplement this friday evening instead? And if im not able to get the interview because my app was late, will this make admissions look negatively upon me?

I’m pretty sure that the Why Duke? supplemental question is WAY more important than the interview. My opinion would be to take more time to answer that question to the best of your ability and not worry about the interview.

I’m in the same position. But I though you could send the supplement later and turn in the common app first. Am I wrong?

No, you’re right. You can just submit the common app by tomorrow and you’ll still qualify for the interview and then just continue to work on the supplement until the January 1st deadline.

Oh ok… i guess i misread the email. Ill just submit the common App part then. Thanks everybody! (I love this site lol)

Wait I’m confused. On their website it says:
“You may file the Student Supplement before or with the Common Application or the Universal College Application.”

Does this mean it is mandatory to submit supplement along with the common app or can it be done later?

No. Another part of their website (I think it’s the checklist) says that you can submit the common application before or with the Duke supplement.

You can submit it later, like I did. You still qualify for an interview as long as EITHER your common app OR your supplement is submitted.

I submitted my application 15 days after the deadline for an interview and was still called up for an interview lol

you should be fine even if it’s a little late

K i need help. If my counselor still hasn’t submitted his rec letter, but my other two teachers have, can i still submit common app and have him send it later?

Personally, I believe that the “Why Duke” essay is less important than the interview… there is a reason (at least last year) that the app says “this essay is optional and will not affect your chances of admission.” Ideally, if you can do both the supplement essay and the interview, that would be best, but unless your “Why Duke” essay is very compelling (not just an average or good college essay), I don’t think it is worth taking the time to do it. I didn’t do the “Why Duke?” essay last year, and I was admitted into Trinity A&S RD.

Radddd send in/submit what you have finished and follow up with counselor to get her to send in rec. Does the counsleor page also require transcripts? Maybe a pre Christmas break submission is possible?

ok, so this means I can just leave the supplement portion of my common app blank?

Personally I’d do the essay. It shows another side to your character, and your passion for hwatever you’re doing
