Perhaps your black friend had something to bring to the University whereas you didn't. It's true that people in your range are admitted, but they are usually admitted for having a special something extra, be it race, very unique essays, or incredible ECs. Personally I disagree with affirmative action as well, but if I had been rejected with a score that low, I would be able to admit it was because I didn't have anything unique to bring to the University.

look im just trying to get in just like everyone else here and i have a chance. if i dont have anything to bring this year then i will apply as a transfer next year and graduate with the same degree that everyone else in this forum will. Purdue and Michigan State both feel that i have something to bring to their campus and i understand that Michigan is a better school than both of those but not by far. I have good EC's so i just think that i need to keep up my grades and i will have a good chance of getting in.

As of this fall, affirmative action can no longer be used in admissions.

If you're deferred, it's not the end of the world. You still have a shot at getting accepted.

zkevin: your deferral letter is different from the one I got. I would still be surprised if you did not get in later though. Your GPA (the part they mostly care about) is much better than mine.

really would you be interested in typing the letter partly out because i recieved the same one as zkevin did as he typed it out. So do you think that your letter is better or worse?

To be honest, I don't really think my chances are looking good since I got deferred, because I heard of very little people last year that got in after being deferred. One of my friends got deferred then rejected with a 3.9 UM and 30 ACT with decent EC's. He submitted his app early, but his app wasn't "complete" due to various errors till late. But still..he should have gotten in after being deferred. :/

Here is my theory:

People who submitted early that had less-than-satisfactory credentials, just like the 26 ACT people at my school, slipped under the radar because Umich wanted to admit as many people as possible before election day.

Then, they gave out a ton of scholarships to their smart minority applicants.

Then, they deferred everyone who wasn't complete for various reasons, and will slowly trickle them in.

I always thought Umich accepted only top-tier students. But when people post here with excellent stats and white kids with few ECs, no legacies, and 26 ACT scores get in, I have a problem.

quote by hoedown: "I don't think it's particularly classy for anyone to try to needle you about being admitted or not. However, I want to address the above because many people on this forum claim to "KNOW" how they stack up to the other candidates who apply. That's speculative. It isn't clear to me how anyone knows this except for people at U-M who know how the readers evaluated an application."

I thought hoedown just made a post about this! You guys should listen to her (For one thing, she works at U-M), and stop trying to compare youselves to others by trivializing your decisions. It won't help.

Hi!

I just got deferred through the mail :) same letter.

There's nothing I can really do except perform well in school, have counselor send in semester grades, and then wait again.

But are there any stats on who many applicants get in after a disappointing deferral?

Supposively it's 50% of the applicants, but it seems like it's alot lower for some reason...

yes, this is true, but it is incredibly fun and it helps to alleviate some of the nervousness people have.

Sigh, my parents needed me to get into UMich badly cause it's a real pain to go OOS since my brother is also going to college at the same time. Now even if I get into equal-level/better-level colleges OOS, I might have to end up at MSU if I don't get enough FA :/

Where else did you apply, zKevin? Are you just interested in large U's? Many of the OOS public U's don't award much in merit aid. There are a lot of private LAC's that would offer you a generous merit scholarship with your stats. That could bring the price down to U-M levels.

I applied to

Cornell
WashU
Carnegie Mellon
USC
U of Texas
NYU
Emory
Lehigh
Case Western/MSU as safeties

Thing is, my parents CAN afford the schools I'm applying to, it's just be alot easier if I went to U of M. And I don't think I'm intrested in any LAC's so...yeah

zkevin, your list of schools are all in the same range... Did you hear from Michigan State yet? What are you interested in majoring in? You still may get into Michigan. Don't forget a lot of kids who were accepted may not attend. Michigan will still have to fill the empty spots.

Business or undeclared.

I know I have a chance but still...kind of depressing I didn't get in on the first review, I thought I'd get in due to my ACT score / good EC's / legacy.

Anyways, no I haven't heard from MSU yet, cause I jsut applied (applied to honors program too, I should get in all those for sure so I'm not really worried about that).

I got exactly the same deferral letter. My stats are decent (UM GPA: 3.6, ACT: 32, good essays, good recs, a few EC's with leadership positions, UK citizen if that counts for anything) but I had a feeling this would happen.

It sounds like they're only accepting outstanding applicants at the moment (everyone who got in at my school got over a 30 on the ACT and had all A's throughout high school w/as many AP's as they could fit in), which makes sense considering it's very early in the process. Hopefully they'll start trickling us in too.

Wow ! These deferrals are scary. I have somewhat similar stats (ACT 33, slightly better UM GPA 3.85), but am OOS. UM is one of my top choices besides UC Berkeley and UCLA and I was really hoping for a quick positive answer. Well I guess decision time is pretty close - my app was completed on 11/7.

BTW a couple of my friends from California had similar deferral letters last year (~30 ACT, GPA 3.5) but did manage to get in the final cut. So zkevin I think you should make it given your in-state and legacy status ...it's just going to be a long wait.

On a different note, I do find the prop2. thing somewhat ironic personally. I go to a highly competitive majority asian (45%, am Asian Indian myself) school and one of the things that attracted me about UM was it's relative diversity compared to UC Berkeley for sure. I wonder what UM would be like a few years from now in terms of it's mix particularly asians.

Funny how I got LSA honors mail saying I should apply to LSA honors 2 weeks before I deferred to LSA. :(

How does that make any sense? How would get the LSA Honors application but not get into LSA?
