hpg90 - If anyone contradicts you then they will be wrong, lol. You are right, even the Tulane site says this in pretty plain language. Not quoting, but basically says that since schools grade so differently GPA is not a good indicator and class rank is better. They also look at how many AP’s or similar courses one took relative to what is offered. Any good school will be a lot more impressed with a 3.5 and lots of AP’s that ranks 8th in a class of 300 than a 3.9 with one AP that ranks 50th.

sharkie - chance threads are kind of useless in most ways. People on here might have somewhat more educated guesses than you, but they still cannot really know. The most useful thing you can do is post your stats and EC’s and financial needs, list the schools you are thinking about for applications, and people can tell you if you are shooting too high, too low, need more safeties, whatever. Many people also have good information about FA and scholarships, if that is an issue. If you also list what kinds of things you would like in a school (size, weather, sports, Greek, whatever), people will have good suggestions. That is where this site can be really useful.

I assume you are thinking about Tulane since you posted that here. In general, this is one of the least “snarky” places on CC. Occasionally the odd ■■■■■ comes along and gets shot down, but that is fairly rare. Be respectful, and people will be the same back.

sarahsett - OK, I am still a bit confused about your GPA. If your school grades on a 0-100 basis, you should know your GPA as it is reported to you. I understand there may be weighted and unweighted, and maybe that is where the confusion is. In any case, your UW GPA along with a list of AP courses you have taken/are taking is the most useful in this regard. That is what Tulane will go by.

As far as EC’s and merit scholarships, I honestly do not know how the former affects the latter. From everything I have seen, it seems to be heavily stat based, but I certainly wouldn’t swear that great EC’s don’t move someone off one edge to the next higher scholarship. But my guess is if you are squarely in the middle of the Founders Award range, EC’s won’t bump you into the Distinguished Scholar Award. So probably worth taking another crack at the ACT.

Tulane is the best school for turning applications around! It did take awhile for everything to be “complete” on Gibson because of the volume of mail that’s coming in. Our process was: 10/29-application in, 11/11-notice of acceptance, 11/15-receipt of scholarship/honors invite.

So, our son sent in his application about three weeks ago, and it only showed up as complete yesterday. I think with such a heavy volume we will probably hear something closer to 12/15. Any thoughts?

mine was finally listed as complete on saturday!
i finished my application in the middle of october but my counselors stuff took forever to be received!

gpa 3.6
