I got in!

Fallen, I was given the “Leadership Award” scholarship for $7500, so I guess there’s also that

thanks so much fallenchemist! woooo yay thanks!

headingsouth - thanks for that. I wasn’t sure if they were doing that again this year.

No problem, fallen. Do you think it would be worth it to appeal for more money? I think the 7500 may have something to do with leaving the optional “why do you want to go to Tulane” section blank, and that a letter may get me up to that 15k. My SAT was 2100 and UW GPA around 3.6 at a school that consistently has a 50% acceptance rate at Tulane.

To aparentoftwo:
Not a question of rudeness but of reality. At over $50K a year Tulane is a luxury that we cannot afford. This is my third go around with the college tuition thing and not even having 2 kids in college at the same time helped with financial aid. And no, we are not uber rich. College tuitions have grown unchecked for years even with the cost of living index and inflation rates low. I simply meant that one must choose quality and value when picking a school just like anything else you buy.

Did any of you guys get that magnet thing from Tulane in the mail? Is that the “formal admissions letter”? Just trying to see if I got any type of merit scholarship, I haven’t received a letter yet… I think.

Cheers

headingsouth - It is true that they have put that “optional” question in there as a measure of how much a person really wants Tulane. That was stated flat out in the latest issue of the Hullabaloo by Earl Retif, head of admissions. So while it would require a bit of finesse to ask for more money now based on writing a statement you could have written before, if you can do it in just the right way, what do you have to lose? Your stats certainly seem to be in the higher range.

shermani - the magnet is not the letter, just a little giveaway. The acceptance letter is really a letter. There is only one letter that tells you that you are accepted, and if there is a merit scholarship and/or invitation to the Honors Program involved it is in that same letter. This comes in the US mail, it is not by e-mail or through the Gibson account.

gables79 - I totally agree with you. College is like anything else, it is a value proposition. If one is worth millions, then spending $200,000+ for college is no big deal. For the rest of us, it is a really big deal and has to be justified just like most purchases. I am sorry things are not affordable for Tulane, apparently, but there are a lot of great schools out there. Which, I am sure, you already knew.

Bummer. I was admitted 4 weeks ago and called to have the letter resent last week. It’s super frustrating to have not heard back yet because Tulane is my top choice.

Yeah, I understand your frustration. Out of the thousands of letters of acceptance they send (over 10,000 last year), it is inevitable that a few get lost, misdirected, something.

The application has been received- notification was November 7, 2010. I cannot find a date on the Gibson account that reveals “completed date.” I know that all of the supporting documents were already there before he hit the final submit button.

fallenchemist- I think it is time you receive another thank you from a parent for all of the information you have been sharing on this thread! Thanks!

Rechecked Gibson account and I still do not see a complete date although the message says complete…your thoughts?

Definitely an e-mail to his counselor saying exactly what you said above, and that you just wanted to make sure there wasn’t a glitch. They certainly do happen, and admissions knows they sometimes happen, like at all schools.

Woohoo! Got the Founder’s Scholarship (20,000 annually)!

To reiterate my stats:
GPA: 3.7 UW/3.84 W
ACT: 32

Gosh, I thought I wasn’t going to get a dime, and now I don’t have to worry about having an affordable option for college. Go Green Wave!

Congrats, shermani. I am surprised you didn’t think you would get anything, though. I told you that you would get merit money, lol.
