I had a REALLY BAD FIRST QUARTER, am I SCREWED FORVER?

^ Yea, I actually know the feeling. I gave up on my floor. I’m friends with a couple, but we don’t hang out or anything (due to differences in schedule/major so we never see each other), but for the most part, I don’t really like my floormates. xD I find them too loud/annoying (cough jerk neighbor who plays loud music during finals at 2am cough) or just hard to relate to (my fault for having a floor of mostly north campus majors).

Unfortunately, the only real (and consistent) way to make friends outside of the people you live with are classmates and clubs/organizations, because of the forced vicinity. And for some people, the club activities can get too time consuming (or just plain tiring). So now you’re stuck with classmates who you have to approach without being too “needy”/“creepy”. Just try to make a comment on what they’re doing or something about the class. And whatever they say, try to extend on that. And make sure to get a name, that way you can say hi if you see them again, or just want to call them over or something.

Of course, you can just meet some random people like in the dining halls or like waiting in a line for something. What to do in those situations kind of depend on the situation though.
