I just can't make a decision....UW Bothell vs UMN Twin Cities

I am currently attending University of WA Bothell for MCS(Media& Comm) major. Last week, I just got the admission letter from University of Minnesota Twin Cities for fall 2018…I am really confused now…if it were up to you what are you guys gonna do?? would you transfer or continue your study at UWB? I need your suggestion!

Why did you apply to UMN?
I assume you want to transfer. Are your reasons still valid?
What’s the cost?
Did you try to transfer from Uwb to UW Seattle?

Why did you apply to UMN?
WHat were the issues that caused you to do that?
How do you feel about those issues now?
and like @MYOS1634 said,
What is the cost difference? and could you transfer within the same UW system?

What are you afraid of missing out on with each option?

Not answering for the OP, but I heard that UW Seattle discourages students from UW Bothell or UW Tacoma to apply. They would rather accept CC transfers than from other branch campuses (maybe there’s a “non-competition” agreement between the campuses.) So, if you want to transfer to UW Seattle, attend a CC, not UW Bothell. If you want to transfer out of Bothell, it would be OOS or Private. WSU should be OK though. OP, did you apply to WSU?

That was because I applied uwb for spring and umn for fall at the same time…i got accepted by uwb in January and did expect i would not hear from umn.
Just wondering which will be more valuable academically?! And as someone said on the last comment, uw Seattle barely accepts students from their other campuses

I have been living in Seattle for 5 years now so like you know everything here, the weather, how it goes, people…etc…but have never been to Minnesota…
I heard UMN have better programs and systems and the tuition is cheaper compared to UWB…but Im afraid of if it would be worth it by giving up the life in here

You just started spring quarter at UWB and you’re thinking of restarting at UMN this fall? And in either case you’d really rather go to UWS? Do I understand that right?

Have you visited UMN?

Yea u are right! I heard it’s too competitive to transfer from UWB to UWS because they rather accept cc students

If you are serious about getting into UW Seattle, don’t accept Bothell’s offer. Go to Bellevue College or Shoreline CC or some other CCs, get 4.0 on every course, and transfer after two years.

Otherwise, UMN is obviously a better school than Bothell, but if you are OOS, cost could be prohibitive.

@bogeyorpar OP is already enrolled at UWB.

OP: You should have started at Cascadia! I don’t think having UWS be your third school in three years will look great on your transfer application if you pick UMN. You can’t count on UWS either way so go to the school you’d rather graduate from if UWS doesn’t come through.

Tuition for OOS is supposed to jump 15% at UMN next year. After that, you can expect a more modest increase each year. My son goes to UMN OOS. Did you get any scholarships from them?

UW-Bothell is always regarded well in the Best Value College list/ranking. I know the rankings might not mean anything, but according to Forbes Best Value College 2018 (released today or yesterday?), UW-Bothell is ranked No. 35. Unless you hate the school so much that you are getting hives, I would stay put.

I did get any scholarships from UMN but im OOS at UWB anyway
Just want to know which school has better reputation and curriculum

UMN is probably the better college. It is a state flagship and respectable school. You can move back to Seattle after graduation. But I’m confused about your status. Did you apply to UMN as a transfer?

You have been living in Seattle for five years, but you are classified as OOS. Are you an international student? If so, what is your visa status, and what are your goals for your education in the US?

I went to cc and applied for both UWB and UMN to transfer at the same time. Currently im attending UWB for spring and got the admission letter from UMN for fall 2018. My point is if it is valuable to move to Minnesota. Yea im an international student and have f1 visa. I would like to apply for opt to be an international reporter here after I graduate. Which will be better for my pathway?

Since you are currently studying at UWB, you will need to let UMN-TC know about that. Make certain that you are still a freshman applicant, and that you don’t need to adjust your applicant status.

It is perfectly OK to contact the Career Center at UMN-TC and ask whether or not international students with your major find work for their OPT, and if so, where. You also should ask the Career Center at UWB that question. Verify the financial information. If the costs at UMN-TC are going to rise as suggested above, you need to include that in your calculation.

Lastly, the winter in Minneapolis-St Paul is brutal in comparison to Seattle. That is the only word to describe it. Yes, the people in Minnesota know how to have fun in the winter, and you could learn to enjoy it too. However, you will need to spend serious money on winter clothing. So put that into your budget along with any increases in travel costs. You can compare the numbers here: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/awardletter.phtml

@janess426 - I am not sure what your career aspirations are or anything about the area that UWB is in but I do know that Minneapolis is home to 17 Fortune 500 companies and a big selling point of the U is access to high quality internships and job opportunities. It is a state flagship research university and has a strong reputation nationally. The school is in Minneapolis and occupies both sides of the Mississippi River.

My advice is to attend the school you would prefer to graduate from and forget about UWS.

If you go to UWB, the UWS transfer path is hard because UWS is required to take a certain number transfers form the community college system as well as their general reluctance to take transfers from UWB and UWT. If you go to UMN, you have the additional problem that UWS would become your fourth college and admissions doesn’t like serial transfer students.

Go to UMN if you want an urban state flagship experience sort of like UWS. Stay at UWB if you like the more suburban setting and if you want to work in the Seattle-area job market after graduation.
