I Just Got an Acceptance Email

hey just wanted to send a heads up out there that apparently the admissions office is sending some email acceptances if you’re particularly economically disadvantaged or a minority, I guess - i’m the former)

It reads as follows:

Dear _____:

We are sending this email in advance of your official written notification of the Amherst College Admission Committee’s decision regarding your application to the Class of 2009.

Because we hope that you will take advantage of our offer to fund your travel to the Admitted Student Open House, we are writing to you before our standard notification date to inform you that the Admission Committee was most impressed with your achievements and is delighted to offer you admission to the College. Congratulations on this honor!

This email is to notify you that the Diversity Recruitment Program has offered to fund your airline travel so that you may attend the Admitted Student Open House. The Diversity Recruitment Program offers to fund admitted students who we believe have the potential to contribute to the cultural and/or socioeconomic diversity at Amherst. If you choose to attend the Open House, our office will purchase an airline ticket for you and arrange for your transportation to and from Hartford International Airport. Once on campus, your meals, housing, and entertainment will be provided through the Admitted Student Open House Committee. You should be prepared to travel to campus on Saturday, April 16th (so that you can attend the early morning events on Sunday) and depart from campus sometime in the late morning or early afternoon on Monday, April 18th.

If you are interested in having the Diversity Recruitment Program arrange and fund your travel to the Admitted Student Open House, please call our travel coordinator, Lynn Rodriguez, at 413-542-5126 no later than Wednesday, April 6th by 12:00 pm Eastern Time.

Our formal offer of admission should arrive some time in the next week. Details about your admission and the May 1 response date will be included in the letter that will be mailed to you on March 31st. In the meantime, please take advantage of our Website www.amherst.edu to seek answers to any questions you may have about Amherst. If you have questions for current students, the Diversity Recruitment Program has created a web page http://www.amherst.edu/~diversity/interns.htm that lists current students willing to respond to your emails. We are all eager for you to learn more about Amherst and visit us for the Open House.

If you have any questions regarding this email or travel to the Amherst campus, please contact Demisha Lee, Diversity Recruitment Coordinator at 413-542-2328 or dwlee@amherst.edu Once again, congratulations on your admission to Amherst! We look forward to hearing from you.

Did any of you who just got the e-mail go to the first Diversity Open House in September or October? My theory is that the e-mails are going out to kids who haven't visited the campus yet.

Essays: the common app one was pretty good, about a dream I had and a poem that was sort of an offspin of it (I'm fond of it and am highly critical of my writing if it's any indication), the other was in my honest opinion crap on a stick. i literally wrote it minutes before i dashed to the post office remembers not so fondly

Teacher Recs: the one I read was ridiculously flattering (from french teacher of 4 yrs), the other I didnt see but from an english teacher who greatly favored me

Counselor Rec: great

Hook (if any): first generation, worked a number of jobs, did my high school yrs in FL but spent all my life prior in Michigan (not sure if that counts for a midwest tip), adversity junk/crazy life story

I got my acceptance over email today!! I wasn't expecting it at all... and there it was in my inbox! I printed it and went screaming downstairs to my parents... :)

A word of advice to all those on the wait list... have faith and be patient... because I'm sure there are people (myself included) who may choose to attend a different school in the fall.

How many people are going to the Diversity Open House weekend thing???

Congrats to the 3 of you!! I'm so envious!

rockettgerl, when you say state-level French awards, are you perhaps referring to Congres? I'm also from FL and have gone to Congres the past 4 years. (Or maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about...hehe)

when do they officially mail you the letters?

Ack. I'm a minority and I didn't go the diversity weekend, but I have visited the campus. Do you think that because I didn't receive an email, I'm automatically rejected, or do I still have hope?

Of course you still have hope!! The show isn't over till the fat lady sings (or the rejection letter comes). :P But seriously... have faith... Apparently they're mailing letters March 31st (aka tomorrow) ... cross your fingers!!!! :)

will decisions be posted online the 31st too?

70reve - yep i 'm talking about Congres. I've gone the past three years. It would've been 4, but I was very shy in 9th grade and refused to go because of it lol.

Lauren - I dont know if I'm going to the Diversity Weekend thing.. I really reallly want to but it overlaps with Williams Preview Program , I'm short on available days to miss school, and I still have to wait and hear back from like the top 6 schools on my list and see when their programs are too. But I hope in the end to be able to go, especially since I can afford to thanks to their willingness to pay my way.

rocketgerl, howd you get an letter from the diversity recruiter if you're white?

"The Diversity Recruitment Program offers to fund admitted students who we believe have the potential to contribute to the cultural and/or socioeconomic diversity at Amherst" cultural read race/minority, socioeconomic read ridiculously poor. i'm the latter.

got one too. see ya there.
