From what I’ve researched, as long as that course is not counting as your UC-M requirement or a major req according to Assist, then you just take the ding on your GPA and everything else is okay.

Basically if you have a 3.2 GPA at the end of spring, a 2.0 GPA in this past fall and also a 2.0 in the coming spring, then you are meeting the GPA req. If that course was supposed to count towards UC-M, then it is below a C and cannot count. If you do not have UC-M completed by the end of fall 2013, then you do not qualify for TAG to UCSB. Also, if it is considered a major pre-req for Econ/Acct, then it is below a C and cannot count.

Yes, if your GPA is below 2.0 for either fall 2013 or spring 2014, then you have not met the requirements for the UCSB TAG and will be disqualified from applying through that program - according to both the links I provided above.

Looking at assist, you need Calc 1 and Calc 2 or Calc 1 and Stats. You got a D in Pre-Cal, a prerequisite for Cal 1. I would say you’re screwed.

@TStark I would recommend retaking Precalc. That is a transferable class that will guaranteed lower your chances for admission to the major at UCSB.

Even if your TAG is rescinded, you will be considered for regular admission.

HOWEVER, UC Santa Barbara does state:
NOTE: Completion of one statistics course plus one calculus course or two
calculus courses is required for admission into this major.

Will you even be able to complete this requirement after not passing Pre-Calculus?

I understand it may be confusing, but I tried to lay out what the requirements for TAG state as clearly as possible.

You have Stats completed, which counts as your UC-M req - you’re good there.

Do you have an overall GPA of 2.0 for Fall 2013? If so, then you’re not DQ’d from TAG based on GPA. However, you will need to finish Spring 2014 with at least a 3.2.

Is Pre-calc a major prerequisite (i.e. is it on Assist for the major you intend to apply for)? Someone else already pointed out that Calc 1 is the major prerequisite, not Pre-Calc. Last time I checked, prerequisites to major prerequisites don’t count the same as major prerequisites - hence they are required to get the major class and are not major classes themselves. Since Pre-Calc is NOT A MAJOR PREREQUISITE ACCORDING TO ASSIST, then is doesn’t matter if you get below a C in that course so long as your GPA for that semester remains above a 2.0 and your final GPA in spring remains 3.2+.

Personally, I would retake the course ASAP and get a passing grade (technically, most CCCs let you enroll in a course if you are taking a prerequisite to that course concurrently, or at the same time anyway), so this whole sitation, at least the academic result won’t look too out fo the ordinary. Also, you can triple check this info with UCSB.

Again, a D in this class, from everything I’ve read and the official links I’ve provided above does not DQ you from TAG. If anyone else can point to something official that says otherwise, then please help us out.

I’m in the same situation as you. My question is, if I get a D this semester and I retake it during the spring semester or get academic renewal, would that fix the problem?

Academic renewal usually has a year grace period. Even if you re-took it, you broke the TAG contract and that is grounds for a denial of admission. I’m 90% sure you will be rejected, if you fail a class while on tag.
