I just got my first "D" and I'm doing TAG? What now?

Okay guys,

So this semester I was really lazy and I made bad choices.

I ended up gettting a D in PreCalculus, which I don't really need, I should've never taken it.

I have a 3.55 GPA that's probably gonna drop to a 3.3 or 3.2 now.

I am on UCSB TAG for Economics and Accounting.

What should I do??

I am already taking 6 units for Winter 2014, and 14 for Spring 2014....

Please help this is so depressing :(

From what I’ve researched, as long as that course is not counting as your UC-M requirement or a major req according to Assist, then you just take the ding on your GPA and everything else is okay.

You still meet the minimum GPA req (3.2) for UCSB College of L&S:
<a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors;
http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/pdf/UCSB%20Fall%20TAG.pdf</a></p>

Basically if you have a 3.2 GPA at the end of spring, a 2.0 GPA in this past fall and also a 2.0 in the coming spring, then you are meeting the GPA req. If that course was supposed to count towards UC-M, then it is below a C and cannot count. If you do not have UC-M completed by the end of fall 2013, then you do not qualify for TAG to UCSB. Also, if it is considered a major pre-req for Econ/Acct, then it is below a C and cannot count.

What if my GPA this semester ends below a 2.0? Does it automatically get me disqualified??

Do you know how to math?

Your GPA right now is a 3.55. If your GPA this semester drops below 2.0, do you really think your GPA will stay above the 3.2 required for TAG?

Yes, if your GPA is below 2.0 for either fall 2013 or spring 2014, then you have not met the requirements for the UCSB TAG and will be disqualified from applying through that program - according to both the links I provided above.

He might have some other classes, which he could have gotten A’s, or B’s in and that could have leveled his GPA out to 3.2?

Strong username to lack of mathematical comprehension ratio

but yeah sounds like you’re toast

Make an appointment with the transfer counselor at your school, or call UCSB admissions

I will talk to my UCSB Transfer counselor on Monday.

But for now, I have decided to enroll in a night class for PreCal to make up the “D”

Is there anyway I can show them the new grade before decisions come out??

If the class ends before the TAU deadline, yeah. Other than that, you’re screwed.

Looking at assist, you need Calc 1 and Calc 2 or Calc 1 and Stats. You got a D in Pre-Cal, a prerequisite for Cal 1. I would say you’re screwed.

@frickles

Lol my UCSB counselor told me I’m allowed to do Business Calc 1 and Stats.

I already enrolled in Business Calc 1 and I already took Stats.

Idk how I’m eligible for Business Calc 1 even though I got a D in PreCal… Lol

@smltk1505h

What does TAU stand for?

@TStark I would recommend retaking Precalc. That is a transferable class that will guaranteed lower your chances for admission to the major at UCSB.

transfer academic update in January. You update your fall grades and winter/spring courses.

@stanx89

I’m retaking PreCal with an easier professor for Spring 2014.

What I’m worried about is not being able to show them that I retook it and earned a better grade.

@smltk1505h

Would the D hurt me badly? I’m still above a 3.2 GPA, and I’m retaking PreCal during Spring 2014…

Even if your TAG is rescinded, you will be considered for regular admission.

HOWEVER, UC Santa Barbara does state:
NOTE: Completion of one statistics course plus one calculus course or two
calculus courses is required for admission into this major.

Will you even be able to complete this requirement after not passing Pre-Calculus?

I understand it may be confusing, but I tried to lay out what the requirements for TAG state as clearly as possible.

You have Stats completed, which counts as your UC-M req - you’re good there.

Do you have an overall GPA of 2.0 for Fall 2013? If so, then you’re not DQ’d from TAG based on GPA. However, you will need to finish Spring 2014 with at least a 3.2.

Is Pre-calc a major prerequisite (i.e. is it on Assist for the major you intend to apply for)? Someone else already pointed out that Calc 1 is the major prerequisite, not Pre-Calc. Last time I checked, prerequisites to major prerequisites don’t count the same as major prerequisites - hence they are required to get the major class and are not major classes themselves. Since Pre-Calc is NOT A MAJOR PREREQUISITE ACCORDING TO ASSIST, then is doesn’t matter if you get below a C in that course so long as your GPA for that semester remains above a 2.0 and your final GPA in spring remains 3.2+.

Personally, I would retake the course ASAP and get a passing grade (technically, most CCCs let you enroll in a course if you are taking a prerequisite to that course concurrently, or at the same time anyway), so this whole sitation, at least the academic result won’t look too out fo the ordinary. Also, you can triple check this info with UCSB.

Again, a D in this class, from everything I’ve read and the official links I’ve provided above does not DQ you from TAG. If anyone else can point to something official that says otherwise, then please help us out.

I’m in the same situation as you. My question is, if I get a D this semester and I retake it during the spring semester or get academic renewal, would that fix the problem?

Academic renewal usually has a year grace period. Even if you re-took it, you broke the TAG contract and that is grounds for a denial of admission. I’m 90% sure you will be rejected, if you fail a class while on tag.
