OK, I have spent my whole day thinking about the Matrix and Dartmouth's likely letter. HOWEVER i realized that im in still in high school, and found out this insane amount of hw i need to do.

Me, too! Only I've given up and decided to head up to bed, backpack virtually untouched. shrug

'Night!

has anyone in VA received a likely letter?

I still haven't seen one yet.....

should i still be hoping for one? or should i just give up?

astar - lol the reason i asked is because for All State Choir, seniors can't audition because All State performs at NJPAC during the NEXT school year...which may be difficult if you're at college lol

TJ, eh? I guess I'm from your magnet rival: blair. hehehe...

maybe i'm just stupid, but what are likely letters? (in other words, i haven't gotten one). lol. le sigh

teasefrend, as i said i got one (i'm re-writing it not to rub it in, but 'coz you asked again). i also know two other kids from my school (in Va) who got one, so (as i said), i think the letters aren't sent out by states, but rather by how they process the apps (as in apps sent late will get processed late and be in later likely wave). so i guess the comfort in all of this is, if you know you sent in your app pretty late, then if you're getting a likely it will most likely be in the last wave (i.e. around now?).

and as sybbie said, if you don't get one, chill! because most of the people Dartmouth admits will NOT have received a likely. yes it's nice to know early and i'm sorry you have to stay anxious longer, but only for two more weeks, right? i'm crossing my finger for you =)

likely letters are informal acceptances contingent on you keeping your performance and not committing crimes and such. official acceptances will be sent out april 1.

thanks for your reply. i really appreciate it.

i just got my decision letter from MIT.

I've been wait listed..to me it sounds like a reject, but still im not officially rejected...

i didn't really think about what i should do when i get a wait list mail. i only planned out my action for acceptance letter and rejection letter...

what i actually did is first i was wordless and then i told my mom that i'll be on the wait list. then i posted a new thread on CC asking if anyone has got the same mail. and then i came into my room continued watching the lord of the rings and listen to some music...to soothe myself..

i never really thought about being on the wait list. but it seems like im gonna be anxious about getting into MIT till late May(since the mail says they'll notify me by then..).

i would've been much happier if i have received a likely from dartmouth instead of this welcome letter to the grey zone....

Since i still have many more(6 more....) colleges to hear from, i'll try to hold on to my hopes till the first week of april...

wow, actually listening to music helps me to calm down.

my heart was pounding my chest when i saw MIT's letter in the mailbox...O god knows what my heart beat was.

anyways, i just checked out that only 37 out of 298(cant' remember the exact numbers) got accepted after being on the wait list, and last year NO one on the waiting list was admitted. (let me know if im mistaken)

o well....

oh wow.. did mit send out their decisions already?! keep your hopes up, teasefriend! i'm sure you'll get accepted later on. fingers crossed but i would advise you on giving up on the likely cuz it'll just make you more anxious. and if you do get one, voila you'll be extremely happy.

it's kinda cool that so many people live near me! i'm in fairfax county too and i've heard a lot about and tj and stuff. yay NoVa and DC! haha

is MIT your first choice? i dunno, i personally vowed not to pursue waitlists (even waaay before i got the likelies) b/c at a lot of schools financial aid would be crappy by then, and i don't want to waste >$500 in a college deposit. i don't want to sacrifice that kind of money to a school that wasn't excited about me in the first place.

i hope you're not taking the waitlist personally (well, of course you are, and i'm sorry). as you said, you have many more colleges to still hear from, so be optimistic! try not to get in too cruddy a mood for too long. remember, you're only a senior once, (try to) enjoy it!

and just wondering, but what's your prospective major? it just seems like dartmouth and MIT are very different schools...

thanks for your reply. i really appreciate it.

o well....

Yeah way to go for the fairfax NoVa people. Hah I'm headed out the country too Misty..but I've got my mom watching the mailbox for me. Even so, I'm going to try to go to the Thai beach, relax, and try as hard as I can to think about anything other than college.

oh Moon Jun, I met a kid out here in cali who's applying to MIT as well. I'll find out if he got his decision or not. Don't sweat MIT. Even if it's not the school you end up at, now you know that you have an extremely competitive application. So, think positive, if MIT wait lists you, then you're definately getting in somewhere good.

Well, I've got a plane to catch. For the rest of you, enjoy your school week!

charlit, that's awesome!!! have fun and yeah, relaxing is important. :P ooh i wanna go somewhere warm too! :(

My likely letter is still in the mail ;)

Congrats on your Likely Letter! We don't have one at our house yet (we live in CA, so my daughter is hoping the westbound mail is slow). But she did seriously consider and apply to some of the same schools you mention.

Williams: great school, greata connections especially if you want to make a fortune working on Wall Street someday, but ultimately didn't apply. Too small, and unlike other small colleges (like Swarthmore), not in a big college town.

Amherst: Not enough testosterone. My daugher spent the last six years at a relatively small (100 kids per grade) private shcool with a rigorous academic program, high nerd-factor, a really lame sports program. She wanted some rah-rah, and some cute boys.

Dartmouth: Fills the boy requirement. Easy to get to. Great all-around undergrad experience. Lots of frat parties (my friend's 260-pound daughter goes to parties every weekend--something she NEVER did in high school.) Model for "Animal House". Respected nonetheless.

Middlebury: Probably wins the "Most Likely to Recruit Abercrombie Models" award. Also famous for just all-around NICE kids. Joke: "How many Mid-Kids does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Four--one to do it, and three to check the J. Crew catalog to figure out what to wear while doing it." Great foreign language programs. Noted for great food. Respected.

My daughter will visit both and decide then (assuming she gets into both Mid and D.) Hope this helps.

Let it be said that only good looking "boys" go to Dartmouth.

............I just thought it should be said.

I would have to strongly disagree with the Amherst doesn't have cute boys or is excessively nerdy comments. Very strongly.

No offense to Amherst meant, Florida person. I'm sure there are some cute boys there--and everywhere. "The Boy Thing" in regard to Dartmouth referred to the proportion of boys to girls. There are more boys. This is a good thing for a pretty girl who's been in a high school with 60% girls and where the majority of boys are, shall we say, concentrating on their studies rather than physical fitness or social skills. Where they play 8-man football. (a.k.a. Nerdball, Girlball, etc.) Where some of the boys don't want to do ANY sport (including running or swimming) because they're afraid of getting hurt.

As for sports: some people (my D among them) really enjoy going to a game, painting their face green (or blue, or red), and screaming their heads off. It's hard to imagine doing that for anything other than football or basketball. Maybe hockey. Certainly not tennis, or fencing, or crew, or golf.

Are you saying Amherst isn't good in football or basketball? In fact, they're awesome in those sports! (Excuse me if I'm beginning to sound antagonistic.) They're 6-2 in football and 26-2 in men's basketball.

I think she's referring to the student body, not recruited athletes...but I don't really know.

Amherst isn't exactly known as a jock school, eh.

Back off, rjsmith. Don't you have homework to do, or something? This is a Dartmouth thread, for one thing, not Amherst. If you want to toot Amherst's horn, go there. Secondly, Amherst is NOT noted for its hegemony in sports. It's a fine school and I'm sure you'll be very happy there.
