I know I want to get an MBA. Other than that, I'm lost.

Can anyone help? So far I've figured out that I should get work experience after graduating (I'm going to Duke in the fall) and thennnn apply for business school.

So how does one get a job in business? By interning during college for a company and then securing a job for them after grad? Or taking a certain major undergrad and then getting a job somewhere? Does the major factor into finding a job?

I just have no idea what to plan for this upcoming year.

Sounds to me like you need to start narrowing things down. At least get it to the point where you know what industry you want to work in.

You might want to look at books that give a general overview of the various professions. Here's one that might be helpful.

Or maybe something from WetFeet:

To the OP:

Honestly, you really need to figure out why you want to get an MBA. Keep in mind that nobody really 'needs' an MBA. And MBA is really just a means to an ends, but you ought to figure out what those ends are. You shouldn't get an MBA just because you think it's "cool" to have one. You should know why you are getting it, and specifically, how it fits into your career goals.

For example, if you want to be in an industry in which an MBA is an accepted means of getting into upper management, then it makes sense for you to get an MBA. If you see yourself hobnobbing with other MBA's for a lot of your career, it may also make sense. If you want to get an MBA chiefly because you want to change careers and so you want access to the school's career office, then that may also make sense. But the point is, you should have clear reasons for why you what your future career goals are and how an MBA will help you achieve. You shouldn't be pursuing an MBA if you don't have a clear reason for why you are doing it.

You'll have great opportunities for internships with Duke alum which will help you sort things out. When I did my tour, I visited the career center as I did at all the schools I applied to. I was impressed.
