I know it's early but...chances for a Junior

Hey CC, I'm a Junior but I just finished up the SAT I's and I'm starting to look around at schools a bit...please chance me if you get a chance.
Schools: Michigan, Vanderbilt (reach I know, but I'd probably apply ED), Wisconsin, Miami (FL), Florida, Penn State, North Carolina, Southern California, Maryland
*Roughly a 3.25 unweighted GPA, 4.0 weighted (This should go up a bit)
*2200 SAT (730 CR, 710 M, 760 W)
*Take mainly Honors courses at a Top-3 Public HS in PA, also will graduate having taken 4-5 APs.
* 2 yr. Sports Editor of the school paper (10-15 hrs/wk), Broadcasts Basketball games (5 hrs a week in the winter), 2 year member of the Golf Team, Played freshman baseball, also volunteer tutor a disadvantaged kid in the local elementary school, community service in volunteering in a baseball league for kids with special needs, Class President as a Freshman, work as an umpire/referee in local sports leagues, as well as a program salesman at local high school basketball events, took a Sports Marketing Internship this summer at PSU (not affiliated with Penn State, just on site) should get some pretty good teacher recs.
*Looking to major in Finance, Econ, or a related field.
*Jewish, if that helps anywhere. (Heard Vanderbilt was looking for Jews)
*Will probably take SAT II for US History and Literature, as well as Math I.
*Will probably have a strong essay.
*Pennsylvania resident

Also, my school doesn’t rank, but I’d say I’m top 25-33%.

Honestly I think you have great chances at all of those schools. Most of them are public, which will help you with admissions but hurt as far as money goes. If you are going to need significant scholarship/financial aid, I would recommend start racking up outside scholarships. The only school you might have trouble with is Vandy, but I like your chances, as I know of others that had a less impressive set of credentials but got in. I definitely recommend ED for Vandy, it should help your chances.

Hmmm… your GPA and rank are a bit low for many of these schools. Just do whatever you can for the next year to be as appealing a candidate as possible. One thing going for you very strongly is that you have an evident passion: Sports. Whenever a candidate is has as much clarity in their passions as you that raises their chances a ton. Just make sure you seem very consistent and colleges have a clear picture of who you are.

Also, for public schools (even high profile ones) SAT scores can make an application. You may want to try to raise yours if possible.

Josh- As far as SATs go its the first time I took them but I feel like I’ve reached my ceiling in that regard as I had 2+ months of tutoring and practice, and my combined practice scores were all lower than 2200, so I lucked out a little bit in that regard. Thanks to both of you for your input. Keep the chancing coming!

I promised I’d chance back, so here it goes!
Though your GPA isn’t as great as others, your SAT scores are great! Since you seem to be very good at writing, I would say if your key to being admitted is writing a strong essay. Write something that makes you stand out from the crowd. Start planning now if its useful! Get as many edits/feedback on it as you can, and I’m sure it’ll pay off.
I’m not as familiar with those schools, but there’s no doubt in my mind that you can get admitted to them. You have plenty of time! Good luck!

yooooo, You look pretty good for most of those schools. GPA needs to come up first before you can consider Vandy. Thats just my opinion though.

Your GPA is pretty low, but the SAT scores, activities and classes are impressive. Since your just a junior, you still have a chance to bring up your GPA to at least a 3.5+. All of your schools are state, so I don’t think that they will be much of a reach (maybe Penn State?).

Looking good so far, though :D.

if you get your gpa up, being a junior you have this opportunity, you are in very good shape. also with teh 2200, consider some ivies! ultimately it depends on what you want to major in, but you are in pretty good shape with those colleges (with maybe a bit low reach if you are doing NC-Chapel Hill (idk which campus you are doing)). get the GPA up, continue participating in activities, and you are fine.

I’d say you have a good chance everywhere, but I’ll reiterate what other posters have said about your GPA. Bringing your GPA up will put Vanderbilt and UNC within your reach since other aspects of your app. seem fine

Good chance at all, maybe a little bit higher reach at UNC/USC, though. I think you’d stand a good chance for Vandy ED, too! Maybe, like other posters have said, try to get the GPA up for even better chances.

To think you have a great chance at all. Michigan Penn state Miami. Florida and Maryland should all be in. Ur uw gpa is kinda low for the rest but your sat scores are great so I’m sure you will get into at least one of those reaches. Goodluck thanks for the chance

It looks like you have a decent/good chance at all schools. I’ve done a lot of research on UM and it looks like you are practically in there. Good luck!!!

AttackPak, by UM, do you mean Maryland, Miami or Michigan?

heyy i mean all of those seem great oyu seem to have great stats…

i mean as a junior its so tough i remember going on here as a junior being like PLEASE CHANCE ME! but im goign to give you the same advice people gave me a year ago… just work your ASS off junior year dude. your sats are great and i dont think theres really a problem with them (50 points more would be PERFECT but 2200 is AWESOME as is), but yeah youre doing well

make sure you knock your SAT IIs out of the way dude believe me…also if you can try to take math II instead of math I because (im not sure about those school specifically) some schools only accept math ii as a subject test. id say especially since youre looking into finance and econ a strong math background would help (try to take statistics your senior year if its offered in your school)

try to get into more APs or honors courses (just to ensure your admission) and yessss get that gpa up up up! (its not bad right now though, so please dont take that as obnoxious!). out of all of these things, your gpa’s dragging you down the most. everythign else is fine

you may want to look at some more rigorous schools maybe even – some of those seem a bit safetyish if youre going to follow the path youre on now.

all of this is constructive criticism so i hope you dont think its obnoxious at all because thats nottttt what i was going for!

I’d say if you apply ED for Vanderbilt they would probably defer you on the basis of your GPA (they’d wait to see a higher GPA at the end of first semester senior year). Otherwise, everything looks good! Good luck!

Unfortunately I’m not too knowledgable about these schools… but for what it’s worth I’d say if your GPA increases you will have success with most of the colleges on your list (your SAT score is excellent). Applying ED will significantly up your chances, but only do ED if you’re 100% in love with Vandy!

My older brother got into vanderbilt last year ED. You had similar scores, your ECs were not as much, but similar gpa as well. I think you definitely have a good shot. Best of luck and please chance me back!

Oh also I think Vandy loves ED. So that would most likely help.

michigan, UNC, and vanderbilt seem a little high for you, but the rest seem like good matches (unless you can explain your low GPA well because your SAT score is high)
