the financial aid package I got today dunked me in freezing cold water.
I'm afraid I'm going to end up at another school that I like less just because they offer me more money.
I can't believe this cries

They didn't give me much, either. My mom works with a woman whose son goes there, though, and I guess they got a lot more aid simply by talking to the financial aid people. Don't give up :)

I have nothing to really compare my aid package to, but I think it's good -- my sister is going into college in the same year as me, which helps. My Caltech package is comparable, and my RPI package is a hell of a lot better (but I got some merit scholarship there).

Still going to have crazy debt though-- I envy kids who don't have to work their asses off both in school and over the summer to pull through college.

thats weird...mit didnt give me my financial aid package. they just said it would come by april 1st.

well, I basically don't have a financial aid package. It's disappointing that my parents, with $60-70k income, are expected to pay just as much as Bill Gates' daughter or what not.

ditto here. both parents work in companies... if the combined income tops 110k or more per year.. theres 0 chance of getting a need based aid package.

on top of that.. im the only child... =(

i'm paying full. =

I haven't got mine yet, but that really sucks. Sounds like I'll be getting very little since my dad clears 100k with overtime. What makes them think a family can afford to contribute 40-50% of their income toward education? Nobody has that much available income because of the lifestyle they've grown accustomed to.

Umm it's actually really hard to tell how much you'll get... I don't want to post specific numbers here, but I ended up with grant money... and my family clears the 110k point by a fair margin.

That being said, my sister's in college AND we don't own any extra houses/have money saved for college/any other large sums lying around.

wow i've been offered a near full ride, i thought mit was very generous in general?

my parents have 6 kids and only one works so i got a pretty good deal

How and when do we figure out how much they will give us?

I haven't sent in two supplements yet, but when I do, how long would it take for them to arrive at an amount?

I was wondering the same thing, I haven't sent some stuff yet :S

Same here. I've sent two emails to finaid@mit.edu, but have had no replies. I sent a third one to one of the financial aid officers and I'm still antsy...

did anyone get loans as part of their package? (self-help and the $5500 student contribution doesn't count)

i thought they were really generous, got like full tuition. =] yay mit!

i heard the EA admits get their finaid letter by 4/1.

"if the combined income tops 110k or more per year.. theres 0 chance of getting a need based aid package."

I'm getting about a third of tuition paid for...but then, we have massive debt + sibling in college.

i'm nervous also. i only need the us citizenship documentation but i sent it about 5 days ago. the finaid tracking says it has not received it yet. so.... what should i do?! i sent an email to finaid@mit.edu too but i haven't received a reply yet also.

I wouldn't panic yet, orbis; I'm sure it will take time for the portal to be updated. A lot of people freaked out about the delays during the application season.

you will have a chance at CPW to sit down with someone in the financial aid office. There will also be opportunities during your college years to make money yourself. MIT probably has more such opportunities than many places. If you have heavy duty technical skills you may be able to make something pretty substantial during the summer.

My dad gets 70k (after taxes) and my parents only have to pay 13k. No loans, and the standard 5.5k self-help.
Interesting how everyone else's seems to give lot less.
Perhaps b/c we had next to no $$ in the bank.
Thanks MIT! I shall make the most of this generous help.
