Alright, so basically in december my mom said I should make a deposit at North Carolina State University, where I had just been admitted early action (NOT early decision) and sign up for dorms since it is my backup school and she assumed there was about an 80% chance I was going there. She said that $150 wasn't a lot compared to being late to application processes in the school if I end up going there or somewhere else so I should pay the deposit.

I completely misinterpreted what she said and I thought she meant pay the deposit to BOTH schools I was now unsure of, and today I paid the $250 deposit to Georgia Tech after getting an early action admission and realized after it was a terrible decision.

Now I'm terrified Georgia Tech might get in contact with NC State and they'll realize I double-deposited and admission will be rescinded. What should I do? I already completed the dorm application to NC state but should I tell Georgia to cancel their deposit and then lose $250? Then maybe have to pay another $250 again if I do decide to go there, and withdraw the $150 deposit from NC state?

I need advice, I'm scared and not sure what to do. Can someone help?

Relax. I’m sure this is done a lot more than you think–deliberately–and I doubt the schools have the time or inclination to hunt down double depositors–assuming they even have the ability to do so. In any case, you can contact the GT admissions office and tell them the deposit was sent in error and ask if it’s possible to get a refund, explaining that you will have to wait for your financial aid package to make a final decision (I assume that’s why you are still considering both schools–if not, time to just decide).

Yes, I think MommaJ’s suggestion is good. Just call Georgia Tech and say you sent the deposit in error, have not made a final decision yet, and ask if they could please refund your deposit. Then if you decide to go someplace other than the first school you deposited at, notify that school first that you have changed your mind and will be depositing elsewhere.

the double deposit “no no” mostly applies to those who do it AFTER May 1st. When you read the fine print, holding deposits at two or more schools after May 1st is the big problem. Its’ not really a problem at this point.

Schools are trying to base Fall enrollment by their “deposited students” after May 1st. That’s why double depositing after that is a problem.

lol…how the heck would GT know to contact your other school? Relax…schools are not wasting time calling all the schools in the country asking if John Doe has also deposited at that school. And, other schools really can’t reveal that info anyway due to privacy issues.

Just make sure that you’re not holding two deposits at two schools after May 1st. If for some reason you need to do so, then contact both schools and ask for “more time” to decide.

Both Gtech and NC State allow you to accept admission to mutltiple colleges before May 1; just determine which one you are going to by May 1 and then withdraw from the other . The real risk you face is explaining to your mother that you spent another $250 you may never get back.
