I'm having second thoughts about applying again. I mean, I really want to go to boarding school. But I'm going to have to get about half FA, and I know how difficult that is. I don't want to go through this whole process again, only to end with disappointment.

If I go to BS, I'll be a repeat sophomore, which means I go to college a year late. I could just stay here and finish out my junior and senior year and head off to college. I could do dual enrollment, meaning I would take community college or university classes instead of electives, and go ahead and get some college credit. There's even exchange programs I'm looking at- I speak German, so I could possible go to Germany or Austria. It's highly unlikely my parents will let me leave the county, but it's still worth looking into.

It's just I was so excited about going, visited Blair and fell in love with it, and then I found out that it wasn't happening. I don't know if I can be so emotionally invested in something again and have it fall through. Also, my friends and family and life are all here. I don't know if I'm prepared to leave home for good at 15, you know?

But I REALLY want to go to boarding school!

I really don’t know much about FA or dual enrollment for college or anything, but if you REALLY want to go to boarding school, I say go for it. Sure, it’s going to be emotional, whether for the good or for the bad, but a few years down the road I think you might regret not choosing to try again.

Bamagirl, my daughter has been wrestling with very similar situation and with some of the same trepidation. However, she sees repeating as an advantage, as it will allow her to take more great courses and be even better prepared for college.

I think it is a real trick to give something one really desires the best shot, and if it doesn’t work out, to not be terribly disappointed.

If you do choose to reapply you will have lots of company. Maybe you could start a thread on CC for this “club” ? :)

You don’t have to make a decision about attending boarding school until around 4/10/11, so you don’t have to make a decision now about whether or not to attend. Yes, you need to make a decision on whether or not to apply. I suggest that you have a non-emotional discussion with your parents to be certain that they will support your desire to go if you receive half fa. It will still require financial sacrifices from them that they may not be willing to make. If they don’t support your desire to go after this amount of time, then perhaps your local options would serve you well until college. If your parents’ savings are limited, I think it would be better to use some of their savings for your college education instead of boarding schools if you have good local options. I’m sure some people on this board will disagree with me.

If your parents support you, then you should apply to Blair again. At the same time, select schools you would be happy to attend that place you in the top 25% of applicants.
You can also select a few very competitive schools with large endowments that are good fits for you. You should visit the schools, and try to get at least one parent to come with you. The northeast in the fall is attractive, and could be combined with a family vacation.

If the family decision is that you should not attend boarding school, perhaps you can convince them to let you travel to a German-speaking country next summer. There are travel/study abroad summer programs for high school students.
