I missed a final and they ended yesterday!

Finals ended yesterday and I am now back home. I went to my last final (or so I thought) yesterday, and I entered a very empty room. I found out that the final I thought was yesterday was really last Monday. It totally crossed my mind that he told us one day in class that it would not be on the real date, but a week before! I started panicking and quickly emailed him to tell him about the horrible mix up. He finally emailed me back this morning (24 hours later) and told me that I can take it on Saturday, back at the school. I live 8 hours away, have no transportation available, and my parents are basically telling me that there’s no way they’d be able to get me up there in time. What do I do? Just settle with the grade that I’ll get? I had a B+ in the class, and I’m sure this will bring it down to a D or a F, both of which are failing for this class.

There is no other way to get you there? Maybe some of your friends, a neighbor can hello you out there. I honestly will try to find a way to get there because I don’t want to be worried about being rescinded from college.

Today is Thursday. You can get almost anywhere in the US by bus, and almost certainly you can get someplace that’s 8 hours away. If you tell us where you are, and where the school is, we can probably give you some additional ideas on how to get there.

I can tell you that if I were in your shoes, and there was no other way, I would have been on the highway with my thumb out this morning.

Get on the bus and think about whether you know someone who lives around there who you could stay with if you need to stay overnight. Do your own cost-benefit analysis to determine how much that better grade is worth to you.

Usually there is more than one announcement of this, both in class and on the course website:

I am curious how many classes you must have missed for you not to be aware of the exam date.

Would you really consider not being there? Really?

You royally screwed up, your professor is giving you the kindest 2nd chance possible, and you are considering not being there? Really?

Otherwise, you’d better start learning your lines for your new role:

Repeat after me: “Do you want fries with that?”

Did you leave campus before he emailed you back???

An idea - I wonder if faculty at a closer college would be willing to supervise the exam. The professor at the school 8 hours away would have to initiate this. Never heard of anything like that, but maybe that would be possible. However, the professor at your U might just think you are a goof and not want to make any special and odd arrangements like that.

I left the school a while before he emailed back. I have no money for transportation at all.

Jeez, I don’t understand how you could leave, knowing that you had very much unfinished business on campus. Unless you were literally kicked out of the dorms.

Good luck, hope it gets sorted out.

Dude, you took that class. Find a way to get there. Put it on a credit card. Do NOT take a D or F.

Can you borrow the money from your parents and pay it back over the summer? It’s going to cost more to retake the class than it would to finance the trip to take the test. Can you borrow a car and drive yourself? Get a really cheap hotel if you don’t know anyone to stay with? I would do whatever it takes to get back there to take the test.

@bodangles - I literally was kicked out of my dorm. had to leave 24 hours after my last final. I’m going to try to keep convincing them to see what they can do to get me there.

Again - if we knew the school and where you are coming from, we might be more helpful.

I live in Brownsville, Texas and it’s the University of North Texas.

You should be able to get there and back on a bus for around $200.

@drummerboy120 if you can drive, borrow your parent’s car or something and just hit up I-35. Or maybe try CheddarCheese’s idea, but I’ve never seen any case where that happened.

But still, I would’ve planned ahead earlier…

If the long bus ride (2 ways) isn’t manageable, you could fly AA for $480. It’s a hefty price to pay, as last minute airline tickets always are, but as someone else pointed out, it’d cost a heck of a lot more money to retake the course. And you could potentially leave your house on Friday morning for a short flight to DFW, and return to your house after midnight Saturday night, or early Sunday morning if you’d rather. Last flight out on Saturday night is around 9:30pm. You’d have to have friends who are still in the DFW-Denton area to drive you to UNT, or take the DART rail on a super long, circuitous route up to Denton, or take a cab, and you’d have to make your way to McAllen airport and back, somehow, but you’d recover from this terrible mistake.

Don’t look a gift-horse in the mouth. Your prof is being super generous!

These may seem like crazy suggestions, but not crazier than leaving your college without finishing your finals. Yikes.

Find a way to get there. Do whatever it takes. The prof. is being gracious enough to allow you a make-up after your error.

United also has flights from Brownsville to DFW (stopping through IAH) for around $360, leaving tomorrow. But that is for you to decide, not me.
