I need an AWESOME short story. Ideas?

Hey everyone.

I have a big project in my english class coming up. The chapter is on American short stories, and I need a good pick. This is a story I have to rip apart and analize, thus my inquary.

What is eveyone's fav short story? I'd really like some suggestions that I could maybe use for my project. And I always love a good story.

Thanks

Something by Poe perhaps?

This isn't an American short story, but its still a great read. The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant.

As for American ones I'd say Poe, being those are the only ones I've ever read.

I love "The Necklace" - though it's kind of sad.

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" would be good too.

I know...the ending is so sad.

I would suggest Desiree's Baby or Cat in the Rain.

Westburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson (i think) is a whole collection of short stories that are sort of intertwined but can stand on their own

The Gift of Magi- by O. Henry

or any other short story of O. Henry, he is a great writer

ahh could modern literature work? i was thinking of some sci-fi stuff that might actually be easier to analyze. check out any of asimov's stuff if it'd be worth it. he's got tons of really good symbolism in there that might be worth looking into.

"Rappaccini's Daughter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne...very easy to analyze

We just read "The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber" by Ernest Hemingway in my English class. Its very interesting to analyze...... I'd tell you what's interesting about it, but then I'd reveal the whole ending.

A Diamond as Big as the Ritz. (Fitzgerald, I believe).

For Esme with Love and Squalor, or anything else by Salinger.

Jumping Frog - Mark Twain

Hills Like White Elephants- Ernest Hemingway

Very easy to analyze.

i <3 all heminways.

try, the yellow wallpaper. very groovy baby.

Yellow Wallpaper was messed up. As was "The Lottery."

i love gift of the magi!!!!

Just so there's no confusion:

Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson, not Westburg

somebodynew...I second that comment on "The Lottery"!! That story was just plain twisted, and we spent THREE FULL CLASS HOURS discussing the darn thing :(

I second (or third, w/e) something by Poe. His stories are wonderfully morbid :D
