I need help on planning my transfer

Hey all!

Right now I am a freshman at UIUC and I know I want to transfer out. I came here because I wanted to put less of a financial burden on my family, but at this point my unhappiness at this school is jeopardizing my chances of getting into medical school. Particularly I am not fond of the size of the school, the feeling that I am just a number to the administration/professors, the location of the school, and the emphasis on greek life and sports rather than achademics. I don't have a gpa yet, but my expected grades are an A+ in arabic history (3 credit hours), an A+ in intro to college (1 credit hour), an A+ in sociology (3 credit hours), a B- in molecular and cellular biology (4 credit hours) and a B- in chem 102 (3 credit hours) which should be a 3.2/3.3. Obviously this gpa is horrible. The good news, however, is that next semester i'm required to take much easier classes and I'm confident I can get a 2nd semester gpa of at least 3.8ish. ALso, I already have 30 credit hours as a freshman under my belt because of Ap's and cc classes. In high school i had a 3.5/4.00 unweighted with 9 ap classes, was top 10% of my class weighted, was in track team, debate team, president of choir board, hospital volunteering; in college I'm in pre-med club and christian club so far. I got a 30 on my act. I am a molecular and cellular biology major planning on switching to psychology.

My ideal school to transfer to would be northwestern; obviously my gpa is not good enough so far, and I'm worried that by the time freshman year ends its too late to raise it. Other then that, I just want a more personal, smaller school that is very academic (perhaps like a LAC or a small/medium university)? Any suggestions for schools or what I should do in order to make myself a better transfer applicant? Also what is a suggested time table for transferring for someone in my prediciment? Since i'm a semester ahead would a semester off help? The thought of another three years at this school really makes me sad :(

If you are interested in staying in Illinois and are looking for a research oriented university with a good pre-med program and good psychology, consider [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu). It is relatively small and undergraduates get a lot of personal attention. You should be able to get in with no problem.
