I need to raise my SAT score go from a 1480 to a 1900+. Help please!(SUNY Stony Brook

I am not a very good big test taker like this, and I usually get reallyyyyyy nervous and I just put an answer I think without thinking much of it because I start thinking "Don't second guess or over think the answer, it will bother you later and screw you over."

I had a 420 on Critical reading, 590 on math, and a 470 on grammar....or 580 on math and 480 on grammar...

I have an SA book, what do I do?

P.S. Does anyone know anything about SUNY Stony Brook? I'm a senior, and no one with my GPA and current SAT score got accepted, anyone with an SAT score 1820+ got accepted.

I never took an honors class, except last year and I took AP theory and got a 3(although I want t retake it because I know I am a 4 or 5 student...just got nervous...again, I would get 4s on the practice APs!) I am also taking AP Environmental Science, AP Stat., and Chemistry honors.

Would those help me at all? I am also doing NYSSMA and I probably doing All States(if colleges care for that), and doing Chamber orchestra, and might do Pit Orchestra again as a violinist. I started doing Chamber last year. I also used to do track, but I stopped 2 years ago.

I plan to take an SAT prep class...anything else?

I also heard if you never took the Chemistry Regents, most SUNY schools won't accept you, is this school? What if I haven't taken the physics regents? Would they still accept me or should I take a class outside of school(I don't want to spend the extra money if it doesn't matter though.)

Thank You!(This is why I need a 1900+ on my SAT if you were wondering...)

P.S.S

My GPA at the moment is a 89.19. On my ACT I got a 21...and I want to do early decision and sending in a form saying if I get accepted I will definitely go to that college.(I'm not sure if that's the same thing as early decision, and if early decision is just like September-November and maybe December........

Thanks!

Reading - No tricks to this. Study DH/PR lists at least and practice passage A LOT.

Math - Learn all the concepts you don’t understand. Use Dr. Chung’s for Level 4/5 problems.
Writing - Understand all the grammar concepts. There are many good guides.
Essay - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html

Take the full-length test at home MANY times.

If you are really dedicated then you will not have a problem scoring 1900+

Thank you…I Googled DH/PR list and I got different things…what is it?

Also, I never understood, how does reading help? If I don’t know the meaning of the word it will go over my head and I would just read it like I know the meaning, and I doubt a book has enough words in it for me to remember vocabulary words…How much reading should I do? Will reading have to be my life and would I have to be a book worm?

No reading is just a hobby that may or may not help someone with the SAT reading. If someone who read books 3 hours a day spent 3 hours a day doing SAT reading sections for like 3 years then they would get an 800 on the CR section like nothing.

DH - Direct Hits Vocab List
PR - Princeton Review Hot words
RR - Rocket Review Word lists

Go through those and you should be ok. You can try Baron’s 3500 in addition to those to solidify a 18+/19, but I wouldn’t recommend it, you have much more to work on.

^ what a 3hee passage lol

What would be a good daily study plan? How much time should I put in it a day?

I have the SAT barrons book.

I might take an SAT prep class as well.

If I take the SAT prep class, how many hours should I put in a day for each section?

If I don’t take the SAT prep class, how many hours should I put in a day for each section?

Try to think of a good max, for days I might not be able to study, for example maybe I can’t study for the SAT because I have too much homework, or something with work or a family issue.

I plan on taking the SAT in October or November, but most likely, I will NOT be taking the October SAT…

Toby: if you don’t take October SAT, there is no chance of you EDing to STONY.

Why not? I asked my guidance counselor and he said I can do that, but I should start applying now.

SB is a science school, primarily. What do you want to study there? It doesn’t seem that you’re a science person. If it’s psych, the lack of sciences might not be such a big deal.

If you’re taking Honors Chem now, you’ll take the Regents in June. I assume you’ve taken Bio and Earth Science? Have you taken physics but just not the Regents?

One option for you might be to go to Suffolk CC or Nassau CC, depending on where you live, for a year and then transfer in to SBU.

It’s funny, my H went to SBU and none of my kids wants to go anywhere near the place because they’re afraid he’ll show up on their doorstep.

My D is 6 hours away and next one is in his room filling out his Common App after telling me SBU is NOT on his list unless I confiscate H’s car.
