I posted and I hope for more opinions - please chance me!

I am going to be applying to the University of Washington for this coming summer quarter from Green River Community College, and I need an idea of what to expect in the results of my application.

As of now, I have a 3.5 GPA. I expect it to drop because, being the managing editor, ad manager, and news editor of my college newspaper has taken up a lot of my time and energy. In high school, I barely cared about my grades. I skated by with a 2.98. I probably would have cared more, but my parents didn't really show that they cared about me; they were alcoholics.

From the age of 9 to 18, I lived with my parents and little brother on a mountain called Mt. Hull. We didn't have running water or plumbing, and winters where barely survivable (3-4 ft of snow with non-public roads and subzero temperatures). The day I graduated, I came home to find my parents drunkenly packing my things. My emotions were very mixed; I was both relieved that I didn't have to live with them, but saddened by the fact that they wanted me to leave so badly.

After the summer ended, I had to move to Kent — over 200 miles away from my home town — to attend community college.

I will be graduation with 90+ credits and my general AA. I have tailored my entire time here at GRCC to transfer to the UW, so all of my credits have an equivalent and will transfer.

Also, I have a couple grades below 3.0 (I am terrible at math) and I have received a 4.0 every quarter.

My major is communication studies and I am required to take COM 201 and 202 before I enter it. I got a 4.0 in CMST 102 (COM 201 equivalent) and I have to take COM 202 at UW. I also have to take 10 writing credits at UW before I enter my major because my college doesn't offer what is considered a W credit at UW standards.

This is why I am applying for summer quarter; I would like to be ready for my major before fall quarter.

Summary:

High school
- GPA: 2.98
- Extra curricular: Captain of the drumline (3 years)
6th grade camp counselor (4 years)
- SAT: 1700

College
- GPA: 3.5
- Extra curricular: Managing editor, ad manager, news editor of The Current student newspaper
Phi Theta Kappa national honor society
Major: Communication studies

hello shaemus, Im not sure if I replied to you before, but I will anyways.

Its important to know that your highschool gpa and extra curriculars are not considered for UW transfer admissions if you have more than 45 credits.
Furthermore your SAT does not hold as much weight, but you can still submit it if you feel it will help.

Moving to the top of your post, Ide like to stress how I feel about something you said.
“I probably would have cared more, but my parents didn’t really show that they cared about me; they were alcoholics.”
I just got done reading one of the worse personal statements where the student did nothing but make excuses and blame society for his position in life. His personal statement came off as a sob story that stressed awkward pseudo-pathos while completely ignoring the prompt.

Needless to say this student was rejected from UW with stats similar to yours.

Its important that you dont talk about what you have going against you in your personal statement, and instead talk about what you’ve overcome.

for example, dont talk about how society is impossible to integrate into because of your skin color, instead talk about how you strive to overcome societal pressures by working harder to integrate.

The next piece of advice I have to offer is not to aim for W-classes. These are substitutes for english classes and can cause you to look less competitive for graduate school. I am not proficient in a com majors reqs, however normally you’re not allowed to take all W classes to fulfill your english requirement.

Back to the title of your thread, “chance me”, I normally dont do this but ide say with a small amount of certainty that you have a 35% chance of getting in.

If youd like you can send your personal statement to me and I can help you edit it.
however ide like to premises that offer with letting you know that I used to debate at a national level in highschool and will only find everything wrong with your personal statement… However ive helped 2 students write their personal statements and they have all gotten in ;)

I would agree with Veve on the sob story thing. You aren’t going to get into college complaining about your parents or your life. Focus on writing an essay that answers the very specific questions asked and choose answers that allow you to discuss your strengths as an individual. Don’t worry about classes you’ve taken or need. If you get accepted you can speak with an advisor about how best to proceed.

Thank you for commenting on my post!

I understand that highschool stats bare no weight in whether I get accepted or not. I just wanted to display those to show the contrast between my high school and college careers.

Also, in regards to what I said about my parents, I understand and agree with what you said about that. I don’t plan on making that my focus, but I do want to address that since it was a factor. I also don’t blame them for the way I was. I am just realistic in that I know their lifestyle was a large factor in my upbringing.

On the W classes, my understanding is that I am required to take 10 credits in that type of class to get into my major. Please clarify if you can, because none of the classes offered at my school count as W classes.

Thank you for the advice and offer. I will get back to you with my personal statement when it is complete. I feel that I have overcome and fought a lot of obsticles in my life to get to where I am at, and I want to focus on how overcoming those things has changed me and made me the person I am today.

I ran a DARS on a comm degree.

Here are the results.
you need 5 credits of english composition
I earned this by taking - CUSP134

I dont believe this course can be subed by a W course.

you also need 10 credits of W courses.
I earned credit in these by taking BCUSP104 and BCUSP115

I sent you a copy of my dars via private message.

Thank you very much!

I will be finishing my personal statement soon. So, expect an email from me asking for some help with it. I truly hope that I can be excepted to the UW. It is my dream school and the reason I went to community college instead of another university (I was rejected by UW out of high school).

Cheers!

same here and I just got in as a transfer student ;)

veve, how do you know that person got rejected from uw? Im really stressed out about my application… I am applying as a freshmen, and i think my extra curriculum is good, im very active in my school and community. My gpa is 3.81 but my sat scores are very worrisome… i got 1800, which i know is uw’s border line. Im taking it again in this december 1st hoping to raise it… my only hope are my essays. Im trying my best to come off in any wrong way, but somehow, i feel like my essays don’t have that wow factor, and i feel they are kind of typical… im so worried. I already have them proofread, but can you look at it and tell me what you think?

Im trying my best not* to come off in any wrong way. Excuse the mistake. :)

Make sure your essay is a good as it can get! One of my good friends got in as a freshman with your GPA and less than 1400 on the SATs. She had a really good essay though. That just goes to show how large of a factor the essay is.

What year did she get into UW? I wish it would still be as easy… I think its gotten much much much more difficult to get now. And ye is kind of eccentric on their admission. I don’t know what they are looking for. Stress… uw is also my dream school and it would be devestating if I didn’t get it…

Uw is kind of eccentric *

@uwdreamer,
I was at his house, he went and got the mail, opened the letter, and we read it.

Send your personal statement to me along with the prompt. Ill get to it after my mid terms today.

Was he a transfer student or freshmen? Thank you so much!

uwdreamer: If you need someone else to read your personal statement, feel free to send it to me as well.

UW accepts and rejects an array of people. I know people who finished an IB diploma after 3 years in high school, had 2200 SATs, and got rejected. I know people who started in a bad position work their way up to being in one of our top engineering programs. That personal statement will be your golden ticket if written well.

This is solid gold advice ^

@uwdreamer
transfer applicant

I think i will send it to both of you. Seeing how well you both know about the admissions process, i really trust both of your opinions. Speedsolver, are you a student at uw? do you have an email i could send it to?

veve, i think CC concealed your email for privacy policies. I got everything in the first part, just not after @. Is it @hotmail or ■■■■■■?

Hey uwdreamer, yeah I’m a student at UW. I’ll PM you.
