but is a C in English fine to not be rescinded??

Not that I have one but I'm just trying to be sure.

but is a C in English fine to not be rescinded??

Not that I have one but I'm just trying to be sure.

I’m guessing, AP English? I think B is safe, but C…hmm… tricky…

Btw, I have another question about what happens after acceptance (although I don’t even know the result yet)
The tour guide when I visited HMC said she didn’t even take AP exams or study much after she got in as ED. I asked my physics teacher about not taking AP exams after I get accepted to my first choice, but he said I still should take the exams because that’s the collegeboard’s policy. Now, how did the tour guide manage not to take them then? I’m curious to see what others think about this.

it’s not the collegeboard’s policy…

You don’t have to take AP exams if you don’t want to. Collegeboard can’t make you do stuff. But anyway, HMC doesn’t accept credit for many AP exams so save your money if you can. Here’s a breakdown by subject:

(1) Calc BC: Placement into Math 11M (accelerated calc) if you get a 4/5.

(2) Stats: Credit for Math 62 if you get a 5? (not sure if 4 is accepted)

(3) Physics C Mech: Placement into an accelerated section of Phys 24 (mechanics)

(4) Compsci: Placement, I think. not sure

Worthless as far as HMC credit goes: Calc AB, Chemistry, Physics B, Physics C E&M, Biology, and all other subjects. You have to take a placement test to get credit for those areas, so taking the AP test is a waste of money.

maruhan, if a C is unusual on your transcript, you can probably expect to receive a letter asking you to explain it. Mudd does care about those midyear reports.

I got a C in AP English second semester senior year, and as geek_mom said, I had to write a letter explaining why. After that they didn’t make a big deal out of it.

AP credits count for nothing; they’ve changed Math 11 since I took it so I don’t know how that works, but I think you have to take a placement test to skip anything.

I heard you can get placement if you got a 5 on AP Biology?

Also I got a B- this semester in AP Biology (rest of my grades were good, this is just a really demanding class because the teacher is hard). I have never gotten anything below a B in any course, and nothing below an A- in a science class. I don’t plan to slack off too much this semester, cause that’s just how I am. I really did get lazy in Bio though. I’m not too worried about getting rescinded with one B-… at least I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

For biology, you have to take the HMC Biology Dept placement test, even if you got a 5.

I guess I should work for a B.

I’ve never gotten below a B+, but right now… it’s not looking favorable. (due to the unusual symptoms of a senior)

But what would happen if I do get rescinded for a stupid reason like that?

I don’t have much alternatives because I got in ED.

@ Maruhan: I heard stories of people getting grumpy letters for just one C in second semester. But it’s not like they’ll rescind you.

@Fiona:

Yep, a 5 on the AP Comp Sci AB can get you into the CS 42 instead of CS 5 (though I wouldn’t recommend 42 to incoming Frosh unless you are considering the CS major or just LOVE programming). Also, not sure how that works now that they got rid of APCSAB.

I hear that a 5 on AP Stats may not get any credit with the new core : ( . They’re condensing the math core down to 3 semesters from 4, so Math 62 might not be a distinct class anymore.

Previous Math core:

New Math Core.

My son got an email last year asking him to explain 3 of his second semster senior grades which they charaterized as “uncharateristically low” and “not consistent with the high quality of your work in first semester” of senior year. They made it clear that his acceptance was not in jeopardy at all, but that he just needed to provide an explanation. So what were these sorry grades that required him to write such a letter? 2 B’s and a B-! His other 3 grades were As. Maybe this was because the previous 2 semesters he got straight As, but I was really floored that they would send a letter when he didn’t even get a C.

I don’t think they would pull your acceptance for a C, but I would think you would likely get a letter. it was not a big deal, they just wanted to make sure everything was ok, and you just had to repsond, but they definitely care.

Mid term just came out and this is what I got: (our school is a trimester)
Multivariable Calculus:A
AP Computer Science: B
AP Music Theory: B+
AP English: B+
AP Econ: B+

Well, I don’t have a C, but my grades aren’t so good either because of my slacking off.

But since this is only mid term I have a chance to raise those grades.

And they’re not gonna take away the Merit Award because of my high school grades, would they?

The HSM Merit Award is determined at the time of admission. Unless they’ve changed something this year, they won’t revisit that decision based on your final high school grades. Keep in mind that a minimum 3.0 GPA at Mudd is required to renew it for your junior and senior years (renewal at sophomore year is automatic). Again, assuming they haven’t changed anything this year.

I’m pretty sure its just a 2.75 required, and that renewal is only automatic after freshman year. If I need a 3.0 I’m screwed…(unless I don’t have to worry about renewal until the end of junior year, in which case it might not be too bad).

I don’t think they’ll revoke the scholarship based on HS grades if they’ve already offered it to you.

@Miru: About the GPA thing, you made me look, and you’re right! Sorry if I caused you any heartburn. The 2009-2009 catalogue says the requirement is 2.75. I’ll bet this will make geek_son breathe a little sigh of relief too (I know it does me!).

As to renewal, you and I are saying the same thing. It’s renewed automatically after freshman year, for sophomore year. At the end of spring semester sophomore year, you have to meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement to get it renewed for junior year. Then at the end of spring semester junior year, you have to meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement to get it renewed for senior year.

Hey um, when are midyear reports and final reports due for ED? I can’t find the deadlines on the website…

Hi Blackroses…good to see you again;) Were you able to make it a “go” for Mudd finances?

It’s not 100%, but I’m determined to go here. If on the off chance I get the Presidential scholarship, that would be amazing (although HIGHLY unlikely).

So… I’m still trying to figure out where the 13k a year is gonna come from If I take 5 of those in loans then I’ll have 40k with interest over all 4 years… which I’m okay with. But that still leaves 8k a year… I’m applying to some scholarships but I think 8k is gonna be pretty hard to round up… might get a job this semester, but that won’t equate to 8k, nor will I be able to do rely on that source of income following years (a semester where I’m not paying tuition but working). Hopefully everything will work out though. My mom already paid the $300 deposit, so as of now I’m going.
