I really need some help with maximum transfer units

Okay so I apologize that this will be quite long, but I’m not sure what to do and my counselors keep giving me conflicting information.

I previously attended UCSB and then transferred to a community college with 10.7 units 4 years later. (I didn’t do well and ran out of money.) I was told that none of those units would transfer to CC classes except the English one (got a c- which doesn’t transfer to UC) so they wouldn’t be counted toward my GPA. Another counselor told me they would be counted though. Does anyone know if that GPA will? I currently have a 4.0 at CC but had about a 2.0 at UCSB. I also retook that English class, so I’m wondering if when I transfer they will still count the full 10.7 units plus the English class or subtract that English class from the 10.7 because I retook it.

Now to the tough part. I’m a psychology major going into biological psychology (eventually hoping to go into neuropsychology). I would like to transfer to UCD. My first counselor told me to go for my associates first, so I took two classes (Bio psych and currently taking psych of aging) that apply to an associates but not transfer requirements. What she didn’t tell me was that they apply to an associates for a CSU and that I actually didn’t need them for a psych transfer to UC. My next counselor showed me on assist the classes I would need to transfer as a biopsych major to UCD. Doing research on my own, with my 10.7 transfer units (not subtracting for the repeated English class because idk if they’ll do that) and the units UC applicable I’ve already taken/and am currently taking, and the units I need for transfer as that major that puts me at 83.7. Now I’ve read that you cannot be over 80. So I’m wondering if A) those English units will get wiped off since I retook the class (subtracting 2 or so) and B) if I should withdraw with a W from my psych of aging class to subtract an extra 3 units to put me below my 80 unit limit. I just keep getting different answers from different people so I don’t know what to do. I know a W looks bad (an kills me knowing how well I’ve done so far) but I’m thinking I may have to do it.

First off, you need to repeat any course you took from a UC at another UC, so the C- English, which needs to be C or above, must be taken at another UC ( it does not have to be UCSB). So you still have that C- grade.

You do not need an AA degree to transfer so the courses were not needed.

Whatever units you take at a CCC will cap at 70 no matter how many units you take over that. The 10.7 will be added on top, so assuming you have 70 or above from the CCC, with your 10.7 additional, that puts you at 80.7.

The unit ceiling is 80 for Davis, Riverside and Merced; 86.5 for UCLA; and 90 for the remaining. I would withdraw from the psych of aging class pronto.

Thank you for your response! So I was told that the English class (writing 2) fulfilled the same GE requirement (English 300) that I needed to transfer to a UC so I would have to retake it because UC’s will accept a C, but not a C-. She told me I could keep the grade if I transferred to a CSU though because they do accept a C-.

And if I take a W for that class I will still be .7 units over unless my retaking of the English class cancels out the units from the last at UCSB. I was thinking that I could switch the major to just a BA in psychology (Which would make it EASY for me to go in at 60 units) but since that major is in arts and the other is in science I’m not sure if they would let me change it once I transfer.

As noted, the course will not cancel out the UC course as it can only be repeated at a UC. Yes the second English at the CCC fulfills the IGETC “C”’requirement, but you will still have the units from the UC. The repeat is simply to get GE sign-off, not unit credit, as the units will stand from the first course at the UC. So the 10.7 will still be added to whatever total they come up with at the CCC.

If you drop that aging course, and the repeat English at the CCC is not counted unit-wise, you will be at 67 from the CCC, at least as I interpret it. That will put you under the 80.

What I suggest you do is contact Davis and see how they will calculate those two English courses. I don’t believe they will recognize the units from the CCC as it is a repeat that will not be accepted - although from a CCC POV you can get IGETC and the UC won’t dispute that. They are two separate issues if you get what I’m saying. The repeat was simply to get GE sign-off.

But you need to verify.

Ahh okay I understand what you’re saying. Thank you so much for the help. Do you also know if they will factor my UCSB GPA in with my CC GPA? I know that I’ll have to keep the units but one counselor told me that my CC GPA would only include that English class and another said my CC GPA will include my entire years GPA from UCSB. I would think that anytime your transfer your GPA would start off new from what I’ve researched, but I might be wrong.

The limit depends on the campus.

**Be sure ** you are not comparing apples and oranges. Or, in the case of a xfer student, semester and quarter units. The 2018 info is at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2018.pdf and see especially page 33. The limit at Davis is 80 semester units or 120 quarter units. Hopefully you have not been mixing the units in your counts. If you are about to pass 80 semester units then see if you can drop a class to stay under it. I agree with @Ohm888 yours is not an ordinary situation, and only the ordinary is covered by the info on the web. Come Monday give Davis a call: see https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/undergraduate/contact/ Also given that you’ve earned the majority of your units at a CC you should look into whether you are eligible for guaranteed admission via TAG.

I’m sure they’re not quarter units, I double checked on my transcript. That is a very good point though so thank you. I will definitely be giving them a call!

If admissions gives you a not satisfactory answer, you may even want to go as far as contacting the college you’d be under at Davis (L&S, COE, etc) for more clarity. Hopefully you’ll only need to call admissions but that’s a resource too.

Let us know what they say, please!

Update:

So I spoke with a UCD advisor and found out that my GPA would overall combine together (from UC and CC) and that I shouldn’t have been recommended to complete that extra English course because it will not make a difference in transferring to a UC AND the units from it will still be counted toward transferring. Luckily she did tell me that the courses that my counselor told me I needed to transfer for Bio-psychology are recommended and not required so I will not go over units because I don’t need to take them! And finally, she suggested that I contact UCSB for readmission as I’m much more likely to get accepted back there if I was in good academic standing my last semester (2.0 and above). Of course my last semester I took all my classes P/NP and didn’t pass any of them so now I’m on to the next unusual problem to try and tackle. Thanks for all of your help though everyone!

Update on my Update: In case anyone reads my last update and is curious- The UCD advisor got back to me and said that I would not be considered as in good academic standing and that I could not transfer to any UC until I convinced UCSB to change this. I then however emailed UCSB’s readmissions department and they told me that I am of normal academic standing and should have no problems readmitting! Now I must decided if I want to spend another year at CC to save some money or if I should transfer this spring or fall to boost my UC GPA so that I have a better shot with grad school when the time comes because my freshman 2.07 is not gonna cut it, especially for neuropsychology. I swear the issues keep coming! But at least this a small one now.
