I want to attend Notre Dame really bad but my gpa and act score are bit below average. So if denied should I transfer after a year at Creighton university or wait to apply for law school???
I never recommend going into a school with a plan to transfer. Go to a school you’ll enjoy and do well. See where that leads.
Agree – if you go to any college with the intent of transferring after a year you will never feel committed to establish close new friendships with your classmates, to develop relationships with professors, to get involved in activities etc. and then if the transfer doesn’t work out you will really be stuck. And transferring isn’t always ideal as many friendships are created during freshman year, your classmates will already be in a routine while you are still figuring things out etc.
If you are want to throw in an transfer application nobody will stop you, but IMO it should not be your plan and you should recognize upfront it is a longshot and that in all likelihood you will be staying put (keep in mind that your HS record will likely still factor in to your application if you want to transfer after one year and that merit aid is extremely rare to get as a transfer student).
I do agree that ND is a great place, but if you go to Creighton then go with the intent of staying all 4 years. My S went to another Jesuit school undergrad, had a fantastic 4 year experience there, and then went on to get his Master’s degree at ND and that worked out really well for him.
@happy1 I just don’t think I could get that great fun feel from notre dame if i’m a JD/MBA student.
My friend went to ND Law and is a huge ND fan and my S really enjoyed his time there in a MS program and liked that he was 21+ for his entire time there.
I stand by my comments about it being a bad idea going into any college planning on transferring out, but in the end you have to make your own decision and live with the positive or negative consequences.
@happy1 you don’t think 3 years of Notre dame is worth it?
@happy1 Transferring is just the last resort. I’ll probably stay for all 4 years where ever I end up. It still doesn’t mean that I won’t send in an application after freshman year. In fact if I don’t get admitted after freshman year, I wont bother with trying to transfer as after sophomore or Junior year. I’ll just try to get into Notre Dame for JD/MBA if I don’t get admitted as a transfer after freshman year because I can live with 3 years of Notre Dame but not 2 years. Agree with my decision???
It is not for me to agree or disagree. I am not saying that 2 or 3 years at ND isn’t “worth it” but I am just saying that going into any college with the intent of transferring is a plan that can have real drawbacks. Other posters have had similar comments. In any event, I wish you the best. (and FYI, you really can’t transfer after junior year – colleges won’t grant a diploma to students who only attend the school for one year).
