I really want to go to Berkeley or Davis or ucsb . Majoring comm/ media studies

My gpa ended up being 2.9 after this summer 2012. And im taking 6 classes this fall.. Now I'm really afraid that i won't get in to davis or Berkeley anymore :( since i can't tag to Davis, i'm gonna tag to ucsb.. please can anyone give me some advice for my extracurriculars that will make me get accepted.. i have a part time job but i haven't really volunteered .. What should i put for my work experience? What should i put if I'm majoring communication / media studeies? What volunteer work or any programs should i get involved to put on my application?! :(

You wont be able to TAG at UCSB because they require a 3.20 aswell.

Shoot for Davis. Start considering CSU’s.

I would also look into applying to UCSC.

A 2.9 is really a bit low for many of the UC’s. Have you given thought to your local CSU?

if you do well in those six classes and it raises your gpa to a 3.2 then yes, you will be able to tag to ucsb

Yes…i will raise my gpa by this fall semester. Hopefully i get all As i will.work really hard . So I’ll still be able to tag to sb with 2.9 right?

@CalDud @ucBhopeful16 is there really no hope to Berkeley? I really want to transfer to ucb :frowning: . And yes I’ll apply to davis, tag to ucsb and other csu like sfsu sdsu as back up colleges…but i don’t wanna go to sf :frowning: o live near here…
And I will be working on my personal essay really hard as well… What if i raise the gpa after this fall semester?!

@LAforlife does ucsc have media studies or comm majors… i dont think i have seen it on their list :/

But what are some EC can i do to put it down before i start working on my application?! Like what volunteer work can i do that’sdo with the media studies major/communication? .i would love to volunteer at a news/tv station but are those place really hard to find, do they actually take volunteers? :(

[The Film and Digital Media Major 2011-12](http://admissions.ucsc.edu/academics/majors/film-and-digital-media.html)

With your GPA I think you have a great shot at UCSC. As for the others, you realistically need to raise that GPA to become a truly competitive applicant. All them require a 3.2+ to TAG, and only UCSB includes Fall grades for TAG evaluation. Remember that submitting a TAG application is not like submitting the regular UC application. If you meet all of the requirements for TAG, you are approved, if you do not, you are denied. No exceptions. What’s the highest your GPA could be after Fall?

I have only heard one person with a 2.9 GPA get into UC Berkeley and that was through another person years ago. Unless you truly have some great story to tell, such as flying every night to Las Vegas to win at Black Jack to pay for school or inventing some new crazy thing, I’d doubt you would have a realistic chance of getting in.

You shouldn’t really be considering SDSU or SFSU as a backup. I think they might even reject you. Communications is supposed to be an easy major for people and for a lot of people they are pulling quite high GPA’s.

If you really want to attend a UC, add UC Riverside to your list.

@LAforlife yes i saw SB’s tag criteria for tue college of letters and science says :
-earn an overall minimum 3.2 gpa in all UC transferable course work by the end of fall 2012.
-earn a minimum 2.0 gpa in all UC transferable course work in fall 2012 term.
-maintain a minimum overall 3.2 gpa through the end of spring 2013.
-earn a minimum 2.0 gpa in all UC transferable course wprk in spring 2013 term.
So does that mean i can actually tag to sb this fall semester??! With a 2.879 gpa? :((
I’m so sad… and the highest gpa i could get after fall semester is 3.3 if i get all As… if i get one B, it would be 3.22…

Well, just work really hard and see what happens. The worst that could happen is they deny you and you would have to apply regular decision.

I’d suggest not having a social life this semester and putting your all into your classes. To me, it is pretty dumb to take 6 classes and work a job and expect a high GPA.

I would only advise you to do this if you KNOW you can handle it but it doesn’t seem like you can. My friend worked 40+ hours a week and maintained a 4.0 over three years at a CC. He knew he could handle it, but he did NOT take 6 classes a semester. A friend of mine wound up quitting his part-time job to get good grades this past spring. Then again, he had a 3.6 and wanted to go to Cal Poly SLO.

@caldud I’m pretty sure i can get into sfsu or sdsu with this gpa. I know many pepple with below 3.0 got into sfsu…
i just really wanna go to a UC. I think i write really well on my essay if that helps a lot. Isnt there also a section to explain why i got C in one of my class ? I hope i get into beekeley.
And they don’t have a comm major at Riverside but they have the film and visual media …which is different?

@Caldud yeah i took 8 units over the summsr… three classes. I took English, speech and an one unit class, and i managed to get two Bs and one A. :frowning: i thought i would get all As… both Bs were really closed to an A 88%. Too bad my school doesn’t have B+ or A- :frowning: .
I will work really hard and not have a social life this semester for sure. I actually only work on Fridays and Saturdays so it’s two days a week. And i do want to be involved in some volunteer work to put something in my application though …

I don’t know where you are but CSU’s are severely impacted. They admit people based solely on GPA and what tiers they are in. Unless you live in San Diego, I’d imagine you would have an extremely hard time getting into SDSU.

There is a section where you can add additional information. In all honesty, you should probably not point that out because it’ll make them pay more attention to it than you would like. Last thing you would ever want to do is whine on your application.

@Caldud sdsu is probably a lot more impacted than sfsu… i live in San Francisco, that’s why i know that it’s pretty easy to get in.

So i shouldn’t actually mention or explain why i did poorly in one of my class? It’s nothing to do with disability … but it’s more like a personal problem in my family and having a hard time to attend class on time. My instructor gave me the C because of my tardiness… although i got an A on my final exam :(

It’s time to make some tough decisions. You probably should still apply to Berkeley, but understand that your chance of actually being accepted is below 5%. Realistically speaking, you will not be accepted to Berkeley.

How many classes will you have to take this Fall in order to get to that 3.2? You will not be accepted for TAG without that GPA after Fall, period. It’s a completely objective process. You either meet the requirements, or you don’t. If you don’t meet any of them, you will be denied TAG 100%. And are you sure that other than your GPA, you meet all other requirements for UCSB’s TAG? Because if not, there’s no point applying to UCSB for TAG, as it will be denied with all requirements being met.

Now here’s where it gets a bit tough. If you do meet all of the requirements for UCSB’s TAG other than GPA, you have to make a decision. Are you going to try and take all those classes and get As in all of them to get to that 3.2 after Fall for their TAG. OR would you rather TAG to Merced.

No matter what your GPA ends up being after Fall though, my guess is that you will still be accepted to UCSC and/or Riverside If your GPA gets to a 3.0 by Fall. And you still have a good chance of being accepted to the other mid-tier schools (UCI, UCD, UCSB), but those will obviously be much tougher to get into.

@LAforlife

=( i know it is impossible to be accepted to Berkeley with this GPA… but i’m hoping they will accept me seeing my GPA by the end of this fall which i’m determined to get 3.2 of GPA… And i think if i write a really good personal essay, i still have a chance right! I want to start that essay like now.

I’m taking 6 classes no matter what, including an one unit class. I need those units for to transfer and most of them are my prerequisite classes. They are total of 16 units… And I’m thinking to retake one class that I got a C last semester because of personal problem that I didn’t attend class on time for several times. The instructor lowered a letter of my grade because of it…even though i got an A on my final exam in that class…=(

and yes, i’m pretty sure i meet the requirements for UCSB’s TAG. it’s just the GPA part in their criteria got me confused… if i have above 2.0 in this fall term, how would they make sure I’ll have 3.2 after this semester and approve me?When do they approve?? I’m submitting the application before I know my fall GPA right…
Sorry it’s so confusing to me…
And i don’t want to go to Merced, i rather go to riverside because i would like to be in SoCal and I have friends there too
