Essay
I will write about a Table. How the table is important to me: In Africa my family and I were in a war and so we hide underneath the table from the bombs. Now, since I am in the USA for many years, don’t know exact number... but anyways, now my parents uses it to talk about bills and how will survive for next day.

So the essay will be a contrast of the use of a table in two different countries and two different situations.

The essay sounds like it will be good and the African ethnicity will help but the academics you have exhibited over the last few years (which are most important) are not typical of a Duke student. I honestly think chances are low but who knows, if you can convey a superb message in your essay I guess there is always a possibility. A really good test score when you take it could help as well. Good luck and dont be discouraged because of what you hear on this forum. Top colleges like Duke can afford to take someone that is outside their stereotype because of a unique persona. The story you present seems to show how you have succeeded despite obstacles. You will never really know if your “in” until you read your letter from Duke Admissions. Best of luck to you!

I’m kind of in the same boat as you because I have a 3.3 UW although I’m a junior. What was your courseload? If you have taken lots of hard A.P classes then your GPA might be pardoned a little bit. Your SAT scores are superb though, very good. Being a URM will help too. Did you apply ED anywhere?

yea sorry I had a brainfart and thought the poster said 1600/2400 meaning they got a perfect score and they were saying it in the old and new format. But yea get that SAT up if you only have an 1800.

sorry race64 i really don’t feel you have a chance. Your SAT, GPA, and EC’s are all pretty below average for a duke student. It’s obvious you had a dream to get into duke and that’s good but would you really want to get in if you found out that all the freshamn applicants aced their classes and SAT and still managed to get extricurriculars. Im sure you will get into a good college.

no one on this website can tell you for sure if you will be accepted or rejected; don’t be discouraged by what you read here! you have nothing to lose, so why not take the chance? ? best wishes, racecar!

I asked my counsler and she said I raised my rank to top 30% and have 3.5 gpa :), does that increase my chance. My course load is pretty heavy for my school.

I will try to transfer after a semester at penn state

It’s hard to take the original post seriously. It seems like some bitter individual is making fun of the advantage minorities have in the admissions process.

don’t be discouraged or upset for some responses. A lot of prospective students are fighting to get in to top colleges. Absolutely everyone takes advantage of any hook they can to try to make themselves a more attractive candidate. Good Luck

You’d be a great addition to Duke. Boost your SAT scores and get awesome grades because it’s a very challenging university once you are there. I really like the Table essay concept.
