I want to drop an AP class my senior year, but my teacher won't let me?

Hello! So I talked to my counselor about dropping AB Calculus for regular calculus because I have a C+ in the class currently and I really do not understand the material. I have to hire a tutor before every quiz and test because the class goes way too fast for me so my family is losing money because of this. I talked to my counselor about dropping, and she said it wouldn’t appear on my transcript if I dropped out early enough. However, she updated me that my current teacher refused to let me drop because he thinks that it’s too early in the year to see how I would do in the class. But I can’t wait it out because I don’t want colleges to see that I dropped a class on my transcript (I’m applying regular decision). What should I say to convince my teacher?
I’m taking 3 other APs this year as well, and I have no desire to major in anything related to math.
Thank you

get your parents behind your request. Then request a meeting with the teacher and your GC, where you state that that you are going to drop down to regular calculus. And do it MON.
It is not the teacher who is paying for a tutor. Its your family . And if that is no longer an option financially then the teacher has no “say” in the matter.
Wanting to “see how you would do in the class” is NOT a good enough reason to MAKE you stay in a class that you DONT want to stay in, when there is an alternative.

But remember, you may need LORs for the colleges you are applying to.
Just dont make the mistake of asking THAT teacher for an LOR.

Thank you for the reply! Hopefully I’ll be able to get through to him. And thankfully, I already found teachers to get LORs from

Also, just wondering, does a C+ look pretty bad for colleges?

If you think you are not going to be able to pull that grade up from a C+, you should most definitely drop. It’s not worth risking a bad grade for college apps just because your teacher thinks you should wait it out.

Drop the class. Its your future and your life…don’t let that teacher bully you. Even if you are at a public school you are the consumer. Don’t even think twice about the drop. Your reasons are valid and sound. Regardless if you have the counselor start the paperwork or your parents call - get the ball rolling…get it done! You have a clear path and you don’t need that class.

I don’t get where it is your teacher’s choice. I would talk to your parents and again to your guidance counselor. Moving into regular calculus seems to be a reasonable request if you can’t keep up with the AP class.

Keep in mind that if you are a senior and you have already filed college applications that you would have to inform colleges that you have dropped the AP class and moved into regular calculus.
