I was deferred from G-town SFS and I'm wondering what I should do now, besides writing a letter to the admissions committee stating why I want to go to Georgeotwn and adding any updates. Would it be appropriate to call Undergraduate Admissions and try to discuss my application? What exacty should I be asking? I would really like to talk to someone about my application specifically and what was missing/wrong/not good enough. How would I go about doing that, if I should at all?

The letter sounds good (sending updates on your schoolwork; mid-year report, etc). Calling them may be a bit overdoing it. Wait until decisions in April and see if you're accepted. If you're not, have your counselor call them and ask why. You could appeal the decision if you choose to do so. (Or they might wait list you).

I've heard it's better to get your counselor to call because they probably know the admissions rep, and the rep won't feel bad about honestly saying what needs to be done. It is NOT a good idea to wait to call until April, because then you missed your chance to improve on whatever needs to be done. If it still is your top choice, talk to your counselor and see what he thinks should be done. You still have a chance to improve your application- take it.

Hmmm...now I'm a tad bit mixed up. I read in Newsweek that admission officers get particularly annoyed when deferred or denied students call and that they prefer a formal appeal of the decision or have the counselor call.

I wouldn't call myself, but I would see if my counselor was familar with doing that sort of thing and if he would think it would help...

otherwise, try retaking the SATs or SATIIs, ask for a new interview, send revised essays and an update..whatever you thought was weak before, fix and soldifiy now.

It's extremely unlikely that an admissions office would tell you why your app was deferred, even if there WAS a clear-cut reason.

Your counselor might get feedback that's a bit more frank, although it might well come down to something nebulous like, "Heybulldog is a great applicant, but the ones we admitted were slightly more qualified".

eep! i have an in, though. my dad knows someone who knows a friend in admissions. as of yesterday, that friend promised to dig for my app and find out where I ended up and why.

i'm scared!

wow, that's awesome! Good luck with that. Maybe he can swing a vote or two for you, too!

yeah, here's hoping!!

i'm actually not sure if he's an adcom or if he just works in admissions. either way, i'm happy...

maybe you/he can give us some insight into the whole process over there.

I think it's worth a shot... maybe you could write them a letter and ask why?

well, he already gave me some insight into the process, which you guys might like to hear...

there are several "committees" that read each app...like an athletes committee, a science committee, an english committee...and they all pick their top applicants and send them on to a final thingy...but the one that has the most power, apparently, is the legacy/endowment committee. interesting, I thought.

very interesting
