So I am filling out an application to UC Berkeley and I see that they do not accept sophomore or lower division transfers. Technically I would have 60+ units by the end of Spring 2016, however, I took one class that was worth 5 units… but it is not transferable. Could I still apply to Berkeley as a junior level transfer, knowing that only 55 of my units are transferable? Or would I be throwing away 70 dollars for an application that won’t be consider?..(or would they consider it perhaps?? I know they do spring admits…but it is rare).
If it helps, I will have completed IGETC and have an overall 3.8 GPA… intended major English…some volunteer work and lots of assisting with real estate transactions and writing hardship letters blah blah blah
You have to meet the 60 unit requirement. Period. AP units count towards this total.
Otherwise, if you want to apply/transfer, you will have to take a heavier course load. i.e. lets say you have 25 transferable units right now. You need 35 by the end of spring. You can take 17 and 18 unit semesters, or you can take one heavier semester (17 units perhaps), take a class over the winter (3 units), and then take a relatively normal semester (15 units).
It will be a waste of $70 and your time if you do not have 60 units. Can you take an online class that will put you over? Or as goldencub said, do you have AP credits?
I don’t have AP units… I’m taking on 18 units this fall semester and coming spring another 18 units… resulting in 55 units. My first year I took four classes Eng (5 units but not transferable), Anthropology (3), Japanese (5), and a one unit fitness course. And last semester I only completed 10 units… I couldn’t take courses over the summer because I had to go out of the country. D: I hate that I would have to take an extra year just complete ONE class.
I second the recommendation for an online class. Foothill, DeAnza, and Lake Tahoe are on the compact quarter system and offer quite a bit of online transferable classes. Taking a fall and winter class alongside your planned semester schedule would be doable as the schedules are staggered / offset so work won’t stack together.
Additionally intersession classes between fall and spring semesters are another option.
I wouldn’t recommend this, but I only had 58 UC units one year that I applied to UCSD, some CSUs (I had more CSU only units), and USC. Maybe it was the fact that I had more than 60 units overall if you counted the CSU only units, but UCSD accepted me for computer science with only 58 UC units done by the spring semester. I didn’t end up attending as I was scared they’d notice they made that mistake, but it seems like they make oversights with calculating units if you have a mix apparently =x
…I would have taken online courses if I didn’t have to go to another country where computers are rare…
To briank, I go to one of the Los Rios community campuses.
I am trying to find a ccc on the quarter system so I could potentially take courses during winter or spring.
I like @SDGoldenBear 's idea of taking an online class that is on the quarter system to help offset course loads.
There are also some CCs that offer classes at an accelerated pace (8 weeks, 2x the regular speed of a semester). I don’t particularly like learning that way, but some people that I know took two classes like that back to back (1 class for 8 weeks, another class for the second 8 week session), thus completing 6 units in the regular time span of what would be 3.
