yea you know what
i wish i wasn't asian
i think being asians makes getting into colleges much more difficult than if you're white or any other race

The reason why race is included and should be included is for one simple reason...

Many of these elitist white kids have never had the opportunity to see a high-performing black/Hispanic kid, and no one has seen a Native American. It allows for a better school and is a better environment.

White people...They never have enough...

BTW, I'm an asian male, and it's harder for us to get into college than anyone else....

wow these "i wish i was/wasn't" arguments are pointless. Colleges will admit whoever they think will succeed at their school. They simply won't accept someone that they believe will fail and waste their resources. Just because you check the "black" or "hispanic" box doesn't automatically give you an advantage or preference. It's a simple fact that you still need top scores to get into the top schools, no matter what ethnic box you check off.
Case in point, I applied to colleges 2 yrs ago. I'm an African American male. Had a 1340 SAT(680V, 660M), 3.7GPA in all advanced and numerous AP courses, as well as college courses. Participated in various orchestral related events, including All-County and selection for All-State. Awards at various Model UN conferences, volunteering at health fairs, president/vp/treasurer of various clubs/honor societies. I applied to Georgetown, Yale, Penn, Cornell, Brown, Johns Hopkins, Binghamton, Penn State-U Park. Now, from what I've seen on these forums, many automatically assume that I was "competitive" at these schools, esp. b/c i'm a URM. Where did I get in? Georgetown, Binghamton, Penn State, and fall 2005 admission to Cornell. Suffice to say that I'm an Int'l Health pre-med major at Georgetown now, and love it. Case in point: you still need top grades to get into the top schools. These debates are pointless. Apply to the schools you want to go to. Make sure your stats and everything else match those schools. If you think for whatever reason that checking "Caucasian-non Hispanic" or "Asian/Pacific Islander" will negatively affect you, DON'T CHECK IT OFF. The majority of African American and Hispanic students at Georgetown that I've met deserve to be at Georgetown. Many received 1400s+ on their SATs and had top GPAs. Even if they didn't, they still are doing well at Georgetown, and we definitely don't have grade inflation like some other top schools. So, think again before you make a comment about how they might not "deserve" to be at the school, or that they "take the place" of a more deserving White or Asian student.

oh and JuiceBoxHero, I generally agree with your comments. haha, how many times have I heard "yeah, you're my first black friend ever", or "I've never seen black people till I got here", etc. Actually, I had a group meeting in the library a few wks ago, and while we were wasting time(b/c that's how the majority of time in a group meeting goes, haha), we went around the table and talked about what we wrote in our essays on the application to Gtown(one of the people in the group works in the admissions office so of course we had to talk about our own apps). One guy said he wrote about how he was scared of black people and wanted a more diverse school to learn more about other people. This is one of the reasons why colleges look for diversity in their student bodies.

YEAH... I am with firebird... don't come with these weak statements if you can not back them up with facts! Prove that those people are underqualified.
Here is a good story for all of you that judge before the fact (prejudice): There is a girl I know that was a victim of Hurricane Katrina... a black girl.... freshmen in college at Xavier in Louisiana. She lost everything at school and had to come back to Chicago to attend school here. Loyola was kind enough to take her in! But of course good ole racism and prejudice showed its ugly head as usual. When she was question as to why she had been admitted into the program in one of her classes, she turned the question around and asked: Anyone in this room, if you have enough heart, tell me why you think I was admitted into this program.... 99% of the lily white class thought that she was admitted because of AA!!! She surprised them and told them that in high school she had a perfect 4.0 gpa...straight A's through high school and she scored some ungodly high score on the SAT, almost perfect..... higher than anyone in the class!
This is one example of DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!
So believe me when you see a black person in college....they definitely earned it, it was no hand out!
Hey Asian male (juiceboxhero) how do you figure that???? Atleast asian males are going to in college......
Good comments young Jason Hoya.... I am proud of you ..... I am a black male medical scientist! Fight the Power...Keep going...I am pumping my fist right now!! As you realize, but Juiceboxhero does not realize like many many others, we (black males) are the minority of the minority in college period!

I agree with excel.

Everyone has the chance at an education.
If you want a good college, WORK HARD.
I know a person who went to a school in the slums basically
but she got into Harvard.

Why? Not becuz she was mexican, black, etc. (she was white)
But because she worked hard.

It's actually harder for whites and asians to get into good schools because of affirmative action.

lol Harvard I feel so sorry for you poor whites & asians ;)

this is nonsense

I second okinawa's statement. You privileged, spoiled kids have no idea how lucky you are to even have a chance at Harvard.

if you dont check off our race in the application..they will still know your race because it is on your transcript.

Total B.S..... it is harder for asians and whites... this is ridiculous! Whites have had the advantage for so long that these last few generations are totally obivious to it!! Why don't you guys look up the percentages of each race in college, then look up the percentages historically, then of how many actually graduate. Then respond!

here is my clear, accurate response: Who gives a crap? If you are good enough and work hard, you will get into at least one of your choice schools (if not your number one choice) So you have to go to your third choice or something, no biggie. i am white and know that i have to work over that one little obstacle. dont sweat, whites do get in, lots of them.

SO STOP COMPLAINING AND JUST WORK TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY--YOU WILL GET IN SOMEWHERE AND HAVE A FINE LIFE

I wish I were eskimo. :)

Thank you okinawa for your well thought out comments....
LOL ... vicissitudes...

AA IS racial discrimination (by definition). If you believe in and practice racial discrimination then you are a racist.

Contrary to the impression that many of the above posts imply, AA is huge at the most competitive schools (undergrad and grad). At the U of M case one admissions person said that they may well not have any URM's at the law school if not for AA. In every "cell" for gpa and lsat, asian americans had the lowest acceptance rate. Is this fair? Of course not. The problem is that a rejected student may never know that the reason for his/her rejection was due to race.

To argue that the educational experience is enhanced due to diversity implies that in some way these URM students are to interact and enrich the education of other students. This is ridiculous, as no student has this obligation.

Checking the little box regarding your race is a self declaration. If you are .00001% of a certain ancestry, you can check the box. The supreme court, or any institution, has never defned who can check this little box. Check the box regardless of your race if you wish. I challenge anyone to find a case where a students acceptance was recinded due to a race based challenge. All school policies say that they do not discriminate based on race, so how could they challenge someone's race if they claim that they do not discriminate.

Kono: AA IS racial discrimination (by definition). If you believe in and practice racial discrimination then you are a racist.

Question: Which group do you think has benefited from AA historically?

for what it's worth, i hate the current affirmative action initiatives taking place in college admissions offices today. HOWEVER, let's be fair and look at another problem many of us face: legacies. the admit rate for legacies at all of the top tier colleges is almost always AT LEAST double that of someone without legacy status. take for example Notre Dame, which each year has a freshman class with 25% of its students having parents who attended and graduated the school. the problem with this however is the fact that more times than not, the legacy status is used as much more than a simple "tiebreaker" like most colleges stay, and many legacy students are in fact much less qualified. there have been studies that proved this, and colleges have been sued.

i read all this very recently as my senior exit project is about affirmative action. i hope someone actually takes the time to read this.

PS.. this is not a stupid thread, it's a huge problem in today's world.

you said, i quote:
"I wish I was black or mexican or native american...I just don't understand why these groups are getting speacial treatment. Things have changed in the world today and everyone is getting an equal opportunity at an education. How does it make sense that if you are one of these minorities, you get to get into any college of their choice with minimal stats? I also don't like the fact that if you are half mexican, african american, native american, you can qualify as yourself being a "minority"."

okay, now i get to blast you. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! I'll tell you why the hell African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics get "special treatment". All these ivy leagues were built on the backs of African slaves, thats the **** why! This land belonged to the Native Americans and it was stolen from them, entire tribes were killed, thats the **** why! Even after slavery ended, African Americans have still be subjected to all kinds of injustices and still are, thats the **** why! So don't you DARE try to talk about issues you know nothing about. Don't get mad at people of color just because you're too stupid to get into a college without the assistance of URM!

Good comments jasminejewel16.... they don't realize we don't benefit from AA anyway... white women do! I am still waiting on someone else to deny this statement!
