I would sell my soul.....

to get into UCLA!!!

Not at all, but I figured it was a good attention grabber.

I would, however, sacrifice many things get into UCLA's Anthropology department. I am applying to UCLA and UCI's Anthro programs from a CCC this fall, for enrollment Fall 2008.

I am a borderline candidate at best. I have 55 UC transferable units completed, with only a 3.35 GPA. The average admit student into the Anthro department at UCLA has a 3.48. I am almost finished with TAP and my major prereqs, but they probably won't be finished until the end of Fall 2007 semester, about 2 weeks after my application is submitted.

I figure one of my only saving graces is that my major happens to be a non-impacted one. From the UCLA transfer admit site, it says that out of 264 people who applied, 164 got in. That's over a 67% admit rate, with the average GPA admit being 3.48. I am very fortunate in this area, since other majors, like Business Economics, have a 19% admit rate, with the average GPA admit at over 3.8.

What must I do in the next seven months to really boost my admission hopes into UCLA?

Hey there son,

Firstly, I admire your drive to get into ONE school, in ONE department. People who are not confused about their goals, who are absolutely SINGLE minded, usually are the ones who succeed, because they will lay down all in order to complete the task at hand. The philosopher James Allen said, "Above all, be of single aim; have a legitimate and useful purpose, and devote yourself unreservedly to it." It sounds like you'll do just about anything to get into UCLA, and what a great school it is.

Off the philosophical, you need to raise your GPA a little bit. That your GPA is lacking a little, it may not hurt you as much as you think because Anthropology is still an almost "unknown" major at many universities, including UCLA. I've never met anyone who was an Anthropology major. Since the admit rate is 67% (so you say), then you should have a great chance of getting in, despite the GPA, and especially with TAP completed. Only one out of three get rejected from that department is what I'm reading. If so, come on man, you can do it. Like you pointed out, it could be MUCH worse, such as other majors having acceptance rates of under 20%, at the SAME university. If you shine through on your essays and raise that GPA, I think you should be ok. And if you aren't, then UCI has quite an anthropology department as well. I know because I live near UCI and many of my friends (who are non-Anthro majors) tell me how awesome some of the Anthro professors are at that school. I believe both schools are in the top 10 Anthropology departments in the U.S. Never fear, my friend. Keep the faith, work hard, persevere, and you will realize the vision of your heart!

By the way, I am glad that you were only joking about "selling your soul". That's an awful high price to pay for admission into a university. A great teacher once said, "What shall it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world, and yet forfeit his own soul? What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Watch your words!

^^^ philosophy major? :P

jarrettdp: keep the 3.35 up and finish TAP and you should be fine
