So I want to do something totally math unrelated in college, I'm a sophomore and I'm currently in Honors Algebra 2, next year I have the choice between IB MAth Studies SL or IB math methods SL 1, you learn more in Math methods, but i dont know if i want to do that much work. Though I heard math studies is a joke. How would top colleges look at it if I took math studies? What should I do? I dont really like math

I haven’t taken it but I’ve also heard it’s a joke. I would take Methods; it’s a legitimate class but I don’t believe it’s too difficult (again I haven’t taken it, I’m in HL right now).

But would a college like Stanford think of it as bad if I only did Math Studies? I guess that’s what I’m getting at…

I’m in Math Methods SL right now and the first 5-6 chapters are alg2 review. It’s a joke. Take it.

Probably, as Stanford is more science-based…

If you’re doing well in math (As or Bs) I would just take Methods. The problem for most people is difficulty, not workload, and honestly if you’re doing well in Alg II now then the difficulty won’t have a problem. Besides, if you’re going into IB math should be the least of your concerns with regards to amount of work haha.

Math Studies is really very easy (but I’m a HL girl myself, so I’m quite biased xD). If you’re doing well in Math I’d do Methods because it potentially looks better (we had this whole debate about whether colleges pay attention to the differences between the IB Mathses) and you don’t have to worry about not-taking-Math-senior-year (which I think happens if you take MS), but if you’re going to struggle to make a B in SL Maths (i.e. potentially getting an ugly grade + taking away from other classes and ECs that you enjoy) then I’d do MS.
