IB Subject Decision Help....

Hi guys,

I'm about to enter the IB and these are my 5 definite subject choices.
Math SL
Lang A English Lit HL
Lang B Spanish SL
Economics HL
Physics HL
For my last subject I can't choose between Chemistry SL or Art HL (assuming I drop Econ to SL).. I want to become a civil engineer or an architect, both with an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
Which do you think would be more beneficial for college?
Thank you for your time :)

Why only SL in math? Math HL is probably one of the most important from the point of view of majoring in civil engineering.

yeah I know but my teachers predicted that I would either get a 7 in Sl or 4 in Hl (from my progress right now) and if I get a 3, I won’t even get the diploma… so yeah I’m going to stick with Sl.

Many high schools offer one or the other; Math Studies (essentially stats) is also offered at some high schools but not others. Doing Math SL junior year and AP Calc BC senior year is pretty common at high schools that don’t offer Math HL.

indrivingmecrazy, I recommend Chem SL. Taking the AP exam in May would be a good idea if you can afford it – like most AP exams, it’s pretty easy and straightforward relative to IB exams, and you’re more likely to get credit with AP than IB SL.

Physics HL is the one subject I think IB does worse than AP. Physics HL is not calc-based, which any physics class that purports to be college-level should be.

hmmm I’ll see if I can take the AP chem test.

Oh my… no calculus?

well thank you for your help!

I’d go for chemistry, since a science class would look better than an art class for an aspiring engineer.

IB Math HL covers about a year of frosh calculus (similar to AP calculus BC). IB Math SL includes an introduction to calculus, but less than a semester’s worth (i.e. less than AP calculus AB).
