Received an offer in the mail yesterday to add Student Advantage to the ID card for $45/4years. This gives 10-15% discounts to various retailers. Do current students have and use this? Is it worth it?

we have a son. he never shops. he has a mother who does shop. the dorm room has a limited capacity of stuff and the more stuff that his mother and he bought must eventually be moved, which for us, was a plane trip.

we determined that we would never use it. If we had a girl,...

I saw it on the kitchen counter this morning. It sounds reasonable...I will read up on it when I get home. ;)

I know Amtrak gives a discount for Student Advantage, so if you're somewhere that your kid could take the train from Pittsburgh to you it might not be a bad deal, though I'd never recommend taking Amtrak after having done it a few times to get from Pittsburgh to Philly and back (10+ hour trips for a 5 hour car ride).

Thanks for the replies, we are still torn. It is not that expensive, but perhaps not that useful? Does anyone have and like it?

Thinking again, I remember one of my friends saying it gave a 10-15% discount on Dominoes pizza delivery, so if your kid is the type that won't be cooking much, it might be able to pay for itself eventually.

My girlfriend got it a few years ago, and she found it to be a total waste of money, though.

I found the only club worthwhile for me to join has been AAA, as they were invaluable in planning my cross-country trips and giving me ideas for things to do whenever I'm visiting various cities. I try to make the local AAA office one of my first stops on any trips, since they tend to have the low-down on what's actually worth visiting in their area.

I doubt it is useful. I never heard of anyone using it or having it.

I wouldn't bother unless you can actually identify a retailer where you'll think it will be worthwile for you. Obviously if they accept it and you plan to spend 300+ there then you might break even. It would be a better idea to set up a credit card account with something like the MTV card for students where you automatically get a % off for certain things (restaurants, groceries, etc). Obviously not carrying a balance...this would also serve to build credit.
