Ideas for Kelley/Hutton Schedule

Please let me know what you think of this idea for my freshman schedule and any professors you recommend!

BUS-K 201 (should I do 204?)
BUS-A 100
BUS-T 175
HON-H 241
HISP-H 280 or 308 (depends on placement results)
MATH-M 119

Mom of a Kelley/Hutton student finishing her freshman year here. That looks like a good schedule to me! A few comments:

I highly recommend K204. See my comments in a previous post “Kelley/Hutton schedule for Freshman?”

If you place out of HISP-S 280 you may still want to consider taking 280 instead of 308. My daughter had AP credit for 200, 250 and 280 but she decided to “redo” 280. She’s going for a Spanish minor, and taking 280 doesn’t affect the number of Spanish classes you have to take to finish the minor. HISP-S 280 was an easy A for her, which is always nice  The only disadvantage is she lost out on 3 credit hours for HISP-S 280 that she earned from AP credit, since you can’t get credit twice for the same class. If you test out of 280 (is that possible?) rather than get AP credit for 280, then you don’t even have that disadvantage.

Since BUS-A 100 is an 8-week class, you may want to look for another 8-week class to balance out your schedule. My daughter lives in the KLLC so she had a required 8-week KLLC class that balanced out A100. You may want to consider COLL-X 112 IU Traditions - it’s an 8-week online class. I can’t tell you much about it. My daughter is taking it in the fall to balance out another 8-week business class.

Come to orientation prepared with other options than those you listed above. If you have an early orientation date you’ll probably be fine. But otherwise, all of the incoming freshmen with earlier orientation dates will have filled up a lot of the slots for those classes. And you will be competing with upperclassmen for HISP-S 308 too. Some other options to keep in your back pocket are replacing one of the classes with BUS-C 104/106 (although 106 fills fast) or replacing calc with finite (although if you can take finite somewhere else, do it).

Which topic of H-241 are you planning to take?

Would 2 honors classes be ok for my first semester? I do have other options prepared for orientation. I’m going on June 16-17. I want to take the cognitive science of eating section. Otherwise I have a few backup honors courses.

I don’t know you, but in general I’d say taking HON-H 241 and BUS-K 204 shouldn’t be a problem for a bright student (i.e., Hutton & Kelley DA). I don’t think K204 is necessarily more work than K201, it just goes more in depth and has the real-life project. I don’t know anything about HON-H 241 but the grade distribution shows that most students get As.

Current student who just finished freshman year here.

Took very similar classes that you are hoping to take. I would strongly recommend taking k204 over k201. Some of the best friends I made this year came from that class, but obviously that can happen in any class. I took the course in the fall as you are hoping to do in addition to another non kelley honors course.

You ask if two honors courses would be okay for your first semester. I will just assume you are striving for all As and address it from that point of view. Yes it is very possible to get all As. The K204 final is before the other finals so you would have plenty of time to study for it. I would recommend taking A100 first 8 weeks and then you will be done with that by the end of the 7th week (likely before your other midterms). Compass is a painfully easy class, there is a final project, but it takes less than an hour to do. That leaves you with your Spanish final, calc final and hon-h final during finals week. I did not take another 8 week class in addition to a100 and it was fantastic because I then only had one class on Monday and Wednesday during the second 8 weeks. I took 14.5 credits my first semester. My biggest piece of advice is to never miss class. Professors will notice if you have been to every class and will likely reward you for it if you are on the bubble. I didn’t miss a single class this year.

For the Hon-h course, I was in one of those this semester, hon-h 236 and there was quite a bit of reading and multiple full length feature films that were in Portuguese that we needed to watch, with subtitles of course. They are definitely interesting classes and for the most part enjoyable to go to. There were two exams for that class consisting of an in class essay and short answer based on readings and film.

I will also assume you want to be social and join clubs, go out on the weekends and other things like that. Two honors courses will not prevent you from doing those things. I joined a few clubs, a club sports team, and went out most (90%) weekends.

If you are interested in any of the Kelley Workshops, honors classes do help your application.

Professors I would recommend are A100, Winston; T175,Yaggi; K204 Heltsley
