Hi everyone! I am a freshman working on my schedule for next spring. Can you please share any feedback you might have?

BUS-C 106- Kolovou
BUS-L 201- Stemler
BUS-K 303 (formerly BUS-X 201)
BUS-A 100- Winston (1st 8 weeks)
BUS-D 270- Garcia (1st 8 weeks)
HISP-S 328- Risner

This schedule is 14.5 credits. I may add band or a 1 credit fitness class as well. Let me know what you think. Thank you!

The mix of classes looks good! But I have a few questions and comments. You must have sophomore standing for BUS-D 270, so will you have enough credit hours to be considered a sophomore? Since you are planning to take BUS-C 106 I assume you are a Hutton Honors student. BUS-L 201 also requires you to have sophomore standing unless you are in HH.

Why take both A-100 and D-270 in the first 8 weeks? Both are pretty intense (don’t let the 1 and 1.5 credit hours fool you) so I would suggest taking one the 2nd 8 weeks. If Garcia only teaches the 1st 8 week class, then take A-100 the 2nd 8 weeks.

I can’t find a reference to BUS-K 303 anywhere, but if it is the new code for BUS-X 201 then I assume you already took K-201. If you took K-204 (or you did well in K-201) then I recommend the honors version of BUS-K 303 (currently BUS-X 202).

Also, just a warning to have backup options. There are very few sections of C-106 so you may end up having to take C-104 (happened to my daughter). If you need to take an honors class and can’t get C-106 then definitely look into the honors versions of K-303. You will also be competing with “true” sophomores for D-270 and L-201 (and maybe HISP-S 328) so again, be sure to have some backup options in case these classes are closed when you register.

Similar to above, that’s a good looking schedule with a few exceptions. A-100 is a very intensive eight week class, and I suggest putting D-270 in the 2nd eight weeks. C-106 has very few sections, although C-104 has many more. Other than that if you study hard it will absolutely be manageable.

Do not take D270 with Garcia. Take D270 with Harrison, much easier.

So I just asked for my daughter’s feedback on the original post and the follow-up comments. OGmudboner, too bad she didn’t get your advice until it was too late! She just finished up D270 with Garcia this week and had her final on Tuesday. She’s a very good student and she thinks she will barely get a B. Here are her comments:

“DO NOT TAKE IT WITH GARCIA! I don’t know much about his teaching style, but Garcia basically put me to sleep every class and is was at 11:15. All I know for sure is that Harrison’s exams are much, much easier than Garcia’s. Harrison had students submit exam questions and then he chooses the best ones and that’s how he makes the exam (and people say you can tell a student wrote it…in a good way). Garcia’s method of testing us is make sure you know every single little detail (like what was the year and magazine that a certain graphic was from during one of the lectures…yeah he seriously asked that question).”

She is also taking L201 this semester. She is finding the combo of L201, D270 and G202 very challenging because they all require a lot of reading. Her L201 professor is new this semester and she feels it’s too early to give feedback on him, but his exams have also been very tough. Hopefully now that D270 is done, the workload will be a little lighter for the rest of the semester. So again, I strongly recommend that you do not take D270 and A100 at the same time, or you will be very overloaded!

Thank you so much for your replies! This advice actually works perfectly, because Harrison only teaches during the second eight weeks, and I’d like to get accounting out of the way first.

I am also a first year student at IU and I had some questions while scheduling for the Spring Semester.

Does anyone have teacher recommendations for K204 and A201?
Also, would you suggest taking A201 or A205, and which teacher respectively?

Please and thank you!

I am currently in K204. I have April Heltsley and it has been a great experience so far!

I just asked my daughter about K204 and A201/205. She had Carlos Colon for K204 and thought he was very good. Maybe a bit boring, but she really enjoyed the class. She also heard that April Heltsley is very good. So for K204, just pick whichever section best fits your desired schedule and you won’t go wrong. She said there is only one A201 professor. She took A201 last year and she heard it has changed a lot this year - a lot of it is online. She also heard from a few friends who are currently taking A205 that it is very hard, but that is just hearsay. If you take just one honors class next semester, definitely take K204 over A205.

ABSOLUTELY TAKE D270 WITH HARRISON. It’s a must, much easier and much more gained from the class compared to Garcia. I just took L201 with Stemler, she’s great! Young and interested in the course material but the class can be a bore. I will say a lot of business courses per semester can kind of be a rude awakening and force you to focus on Kelley and put other classes (I see that spanish class) going off to the side. Overall, it’s very reasonable just be sure to take A100 and D270 separately. A100 is a highs takes class; 45% Midterm grade 45% final grade and 10% attendance, so be sure to a lot time accordingly.
