One of the schools my daughter applied to is requesting a Dependent Verification Worksheet in IDOC and I have a couple of questions.

1) My daughter recieved SS survivor benefits that were not required to be reported on the FASFA, but is she required to report them on this verification worksheet under question #3 "If you were not required to file a 2010 Federal income tax return, list below your employer(s) and any income received in 2010 (use the W-2 form or other earnings statements if available)"

2) Is this worksheet school specific or is it something that all schools will require?

Both my kids receive need-based financial aid. My son’s college, a private, requires it every year. (They require a ton of stuff!) My daughter’s school, a public, has never asked for it.

I really need to know if we are supposed to report this on the verification worksheet. We are also required to complete a dependent non-filing statement and the financial aid office said we definitely have to put that amount on that form, but I am not sure about the verification form.

I’m sorry, but I’m not familiar with Dependent Verification forms, and the way they state the question makes it difficult to interpret, so I can’t answer with any certainty. Have you called the school or IDOC to clarify?

I called IDOC but they said they only answer questions about their services. I contacted the school to ask if we had to report the benefits on the Statement of Non-filing status even though they were not required on FASFA they said yes and seemed very annoyed and made me feel as if they thought I was trying to hide something which I am not I just want to make sure I am completing everything properly - so, I am not all that eager to contact them again about the Dependent Verification Worksheet if I don’t have to.

1234mom, I am no expert, but my guess would be no. Question #3 seems to me to be asking a very narrow question: If a student had income that would have been reportable on their tax return, if they filed a tax return, then include that money in Question 3.

So if a student earned $500 at part-time job, they wouldn’t need to file a tax return. That $500 would be reported on the Dependent Verification worksheet.

If your daughter’s SS survivor benefits need not be reported to the IRS, then I’d say you don’t need to report them on the Dependency Verification Worksheet.

Now, hopefully someone will come along with definitive knowledge on this subject… but if I was in your place and I couldn’t get an answer fairly easily on this, I’d just leave it off. That would be my best judgement as to the meaning of that question.

Besides, you’re already declaring it on the non-filer’s statement. It’s not like you’re hiding anything.

Thanks rentof2. I am still hoping that maybe someone that works in financial aid and is familiar with the form can give me some information on this - I tend to agree that the benefits should not be included on the worksheet. Anyone else with a thought on this?
