IDOC? Questions

Back in mid January, I filed FAFSA and Profile with a will file provision. My h had a problem with his tax form, it got straightened out this week, and later this week or early next week when the corrected form appears, I will be amending FAFSA after doing our taxes. I have already had one college send d a mass mailing that they want a copy of our income tax form. They appear to want them mailed just as I have done this all before but with our oldest and haven't done it in the last few years since we were not requesting aid for his local state college he commuted to. Now I see lots of posts about IDOC. I looked it up and saw it was part of College Board so is this part of the PROFILE process? That college that requested the tax form is a FAFSA only school. Does it cost extra? As I understand it, colleges that want this will somehow notify someone (who? the student, the parent) by some means and request this. Is this something I should be searching on the individual colleges's websites?

If you are planning to apply to private schools, then the Profile and IDOC go hand in hand. It’s a lot of hassle but at least you’ll only have to do it once for multiple colleges. The profile is much more detailed in querying you about your entire financial situation. However, it gives the colleges a good idea of the family financial strength.

Yes, there are fees for both the Profile and IDOC on a per school charge basis. Small potatoes though.

For record purposes, I’d scan the tax return stuff into a pdf file which will make it easier for you to print copies or send by email in the future.

Good luck! :)

You will get an e-mail from College Board if any of the schools you submitted the CSS Profile for also want tax returns through IDOC. There is no fee for IDOC. You just send them the tax returns and W-2s and they will scan them and send the images to the colleges that have requested them. So, it really saves you time. Just check the FA website for each college and see if they want the tax returns sent directly to them OR if they will be using IDOC.
