If I appeal my decision of summer semester, could I get fall semester?

I applied to PSU University Park with Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering as my intended major. I was accepted for summer semester but I was really hoping for fall. I have dreamed of going here since I was a little kid and I am understandably confused and disappointed. Needless to say, I have a very strong legacy, my SAT was 1980, my ACT composite was 29, my GPA is about 3.7, I am in the top 10% of my class at one of Pennsylvania’s best public schools, I am in the National Honor Society, and I am very involved in my community. If I appeal to try to get received into the fall semester, do you think it will work??

You could call them, and ask if changing your intended major to DUS would change the outcome. It certainly wouldn’t hurt. I wouldn’t be so down on summer. Many students who have completed summer courses as freshman, recommend it highly!

Thanks! It’s really just the fact that I would like to have one last full summer between high school and college to make some extra money. I have heard many great things about summer session so I realize it has many benefits. This decision just left me dazed because Tennessee, Clemson, and South Carolina have offered me money for all 4 years and i thought getting what I wanted was relatively assured. Oh well ya win some you lose some!

I hear ya! It’s a punch in the gut when you don’t get what you expect. My daughter is still waiting to get that “coming days” message, and she expected to hear awhile ago because she is already a Penn State student in the duel enrollment program. But I guess that doesn’t mean a whole lot to the admissions office like we thought. Anyway, Good Luck to you!

are you positive you applied for fall with the optional summer session? I thought I applied into fall with optional summer, but I actually applied directly into summer, so my app wasn’t even considered for the fall. I wanted to do summer anyways, but I would just clarify because your stats are pretty high

Yes I reviewed my entire application 4 times before submitting it. It seems like getting accepted depends on what you listed your intended major as and if you’re a minority or not haha but I still got in!

I’m not sure why you are disappointed. You got into UP AND your major! Considering the decisions that are beginning to fall, you’re not in the majority, to put things mildly.
Starting in the summer is actually rather cool: you have 6 weeks to discover the campus, so that when other freshmen arrive you already have a hang of things; you enjoy nice weather, the pool, the arts festival, the summer activities; you’re in a small cohort and you can make friends much more easily than in the Fall.
You can go for Fall but you’ll give up your spot at University Park and woud start at either Erie or Altoona.
How much would each school cost you - all are good schools, so if some cost less and allow you to begin in the Fall, why not?

After a few discussions with representatives from the college of Earth and Mineral Sciences, I was accepted into fall at UP! I also have the option to attend summer still, so I may have done all this extra work for nothing, but it was worth it to know!

@elsuave REALLY? Wow…I was about to respond to your thread to say that if you are accepted for summer you are REQUIRED to attend summer if you want to go to UP, and will not be re-considered for Fall unless you change your major. That’s Penn State’s official line and I’ve literally not seen anyone…in reading 2 years of acceptance threads…get a reconsideration for fall, in the same major, after being denied and put into summer. You are very lucky indeed. If you read the threads you will see some very high stat kids who didn’t get into either fall or summer. Just depends on how full the major is.

Summer is supposed to be a great time. My daughter is going in the summer this year. She applied for fall, but got summer and she’s really happy about it. The LEAP program will be a great start for her and summer is amazing in UP with arts fest, the fourth fest etc…Also, just food for thought - the summer is a great time to get a job in State Collgee because most of the students have left for the summer and left their jobs in town and on the campus.
@mcfet1991 My D was dual enroll too and it didn’t make a difference in when she heard. She applied September 2nd and didn’t hear until January 26th! It was a long wait, but worth it in the end.

The key is that your intended major was engineering. That puts you in a more competitive group of applicants
