If I choose to major in Anthropology at UCLA, will I still be able to transfer to Cognitive Science?

Hey guys, so for this question, I’d like to know:

If I get admitted into UCLA for Anthropology, how easy is the transfer process to Cognitive Science? Is it merely a challenge of passing the pre-reqs with good grades, or are there other challenges too? Also, is Cognitive Science an impacted major?

For other impacted majors like Business/Econ, is it impossible for me to transfer to a major like that if I get in for Anthropology?

are you applying as a frosh or transfer?

As a freshman. Is Cognitive Science under Life Sciences? I’ve heard that all life science majors are impacted, is this true?

I’m also contemplating applying for a Sociology or Global Studies major just because I think my high school activities make me the best fit for those majors right now. Is this a good idea? If I do get accepted and enroll, will I get stuck in these majors and be unable to switch to anything else within the College of L&S?

UCLA does not admit by major into the College of Letters and Sciences. If Cognitive Science is the major you want to pursue than you should apply to that major. See how to declare the pre-major once accepted:

https://www.psych.ucla.edu/undergraduate/undergraduate-student-services/majors-minors/cognitive-science-major-for-students-who-entered-ucla-as-freshmen

You can also discuss major change options with your advisor at New Student Orientation if you apply with a different major.

@Gumbymom explained it well; it doesn’t matter what L&S major you list, they don’t look at it during admission.

Furthermore each of the 3 you listed does not admit students directly into the major, as shown on http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/Majors/lsmajor.htm Instead you are admitted in the “pre-major” which basically means nothing. Any student in any major is free to complete all the requirements to be admitted into the actual major and then fill out the form called a “petition”; everything you do at UCLA will be called a “petition” to remind you where you rank relative to the administration
