Hey guys! I applied to UCLA as a sociology major with a 4.0 GPA and all prereqs done. However, I have been really considering changing my major to Cognitive Science. My question is whether this is possible if I’m missing a few prereqs (calculus 1, calculus 2 and an intermediate CS class) before I start UCLA. My plan is to take a few of the other prereqs during the summer (philosophy class, introductory CS++ class, Bio Class.) This is obviously assuming I get accepted to UCLA, of course.
So, how hard would it be to switch from Sociology to Cognitive Science if I’m missing a few prereqs? I looked at this page on the UCLA website. Cognitive Science has a “1” next to the major meaning “Students are classified as pre-majors until the lower division preparation courses are completed at UCLA.” So I’m assuming that Cognitive Science isn’t impacted? But the Cognitive Science major is part of the Psychology department which makes me nervous that it might be difficult to switch to it. Anyways, any help/response would be appreciated with anyone with experience switching majors to a non-impacted major at UCLA after transferring. Thank you!
I believe you have two quarters to fulfill req. once you transfer. I would take first calc in summer since it’s sequential and you might run into waitlist issues. Although do you need a year of calc? Meaning 1 semester in summer and then 2 qtrs at UCLA? If the major requires a year, 2 qtrs won’t cut it and neither will 1 semester and 1 qtr.
Here are the requirements for Cognitive Science and what I would have completed by the end of summer:
Two courses in calculus/analytic geometry
One introductory psychology course . (COMPLETED)
One course in introductory biology or biology for the major (COMPLETED)
One course in introductory physics or chemistry (COMPLETED)
One course in philosophy (critical reasoning, philosophy of science, or philosophy of the mind) . (COMPLETED)
One course in introduction to C++ programming (COMPLETED)
One course in intermediate C++ programming
One additional computer programming course
I think its referring to two calculus classes (I think Math 31A and Math 31B at UCLA). I would also have to complete one course in intermediate C++ programming and one additional computer programming course?
So maybe my first quarter I could take Math 31A and one course in intermediate C++ programming and my second quarter take Math 31B and an additional programming course?
What do you think? Also, I really appreciate your feedback!! @Ohm888
I see. Do you have the stats course listed at the very top of assist? They might add that if you don’t. Also what about all the non-articulated ones at the bottom? How do they handle that? You should ask the dept.
But otherwise than those last ones and the stats, what you said seems right.
@Ohm888 Yes, I have completed statistics so I don’t need to worry about that. Assuming acceptance to UCLA, when should I notify them that I would like to switch my major to CogSci? Because I’m not sure I want to commit to UCLA if I would have to major in Sociology.
Until you complete the required courses you cannot apply to switch majors. So assuming you haven’t finished, you need to go in as a sociology major. You tell them during orientation. But again, it’s moot until all req courses are complete.
