If Worst Comes to Worst!

Anyone else?

By the way, Pitt has a 75th %ile SAT of 1330...so, I don't see how it would EVER be anything other than a SAFETY...

Pitt does seem like a good match / safety. Quinnipiac would be another good safety.

Nash

I think I can do better than Quinnipac...

One last bump

Keep in mind that your SAT alone will not get you into Pitt.

83% of Pitt students were in the top 25% of their graduating class. In fact, 46% (almost half) of Pitt students were in the top 10% of their class.

Pitt accepts less than half of their applicants (49%), and ranks an 89 selectivity in the Princeton Review--meaning its harder to get into Pitt than schools like the University of Colorado, Rutgers University, or University of Connecticut (which, coincidentally was ranked as the top public school in New England for the past 6 years).

Personally, I think you will get in to Pitt for a lot of reasons--you are applying to their liberal arts college, you are in-state, your grades are higher than you originally asked us to rate on, etc.--but to say its a safety--particularly if you don't get the grades you are hoping for is a bit much.

Keep in mind that your safety school may be the most important school on your list. Go read the thread "No acceptances, one kid's story" on the Parents Forum. It tells about Andi, who was a national merit semifinalist that applied to 8 schools last year and got into none of them. He was unrealistic about where he applied--and ended up taking a gap year. This year he applied to 9 schools and got accepted to 7. The only two schools he was rejected from were the only two repeats from the year before.

Enough with my lecturing--I didn't mean to do that, but I've seen too many people post this year that they didn't get in anywhere because they were unrealistic with their choices--and I don't want you to have the same problem next year.

As far as the other colleges you mentioned, I think you've made some good choices:

American Univ--average GPA is 3.47 and average SAT is 1223, so you should have no problem as long as your essay is good--match to possible safety

Brandeis--average GPA is 3.85 and average SAT of 1330, with 71% of the students being from the top 10% of their class--so this is a reach.

George Washington--average GPA unknown, but probably around 3.4--and average SAT of 1240--so safety/low match--the only reason I don't say just safety is because its in Washington, D.C.--meaning lots of Political Science majors (like you) apply here

Tufts--average GPA is around 3.87 and average SAT of 1390 and 74% from the top 10% of their class--so this is a reach

University of Rochester--average GPA is around 3.75 and average SAT of 1352, so a reach. Going ED would give you a better chance here and I think would give you around a 50% chance of getting in.

Muhlenberg--average SAT of 3.52 and average SAT of 1220--so a match

I wish you the best of success with your college applications.

Believe me, with the schools we go to, he'll have no problem getting into Pitt.

HW, we've talked before so don't take this the wrong way, but seriously, looking at your H.S. stats, if I were working in admissions at a place like Tufts, etc, I'd write you off as "lazy", for the simple fact that, while your stats would be fine for a lower-middle-class white/black kid from some rural hick town, having that many Bs, for someone from Lower Merion, PA {very elite Philly suburb}(especially in giveaway courses [even at a 'competitive' H.S. - I went to one too] like 'AP U.S. History') is pathetic. This shows lack of hunger, and while I come from an affluent background myself, I never earned a B until I was in the 11th grade, and that was just one nine-weeks so on my transcript it shows 'A'. You need to get more drive and you need to get it fast. I see you started off somewhat lazy in 9th grade and it just got worse. Not trying to be harsh, but, seriously, there are kids applying to those schools that've never even gotten a B. I'm not trying to be mean, it is just that unfortunately you expecting to get into Tufts is sort of like a short, fat person wanting to be a super model. Just saying that I'd only let a kid from your background into a place like Tufts if he/she was a 36/2400 4.0 (unweighted) type kid. I wouldn't tolerate slackness from someone so 'elite'. Peace and God Bless!

P.S. - Not trying to be cruel. I'm just saying that all those poor, black/minority kids from crime-ridden Philly (and other metro/rural areas of the U.S. and the world) have, for the most part, hated people like you all their lives, because some had to work like 3 jobs in H.S. just to survive while you were lounging at home and are waiting to kick your a** in admissions, so they can get a piece of the pie. If what I'm saying is hard for you to understand, then think of a 16-year whose parents buy him a Lamborghini for his birthday, yet he's too lazy to keep it clean. Again, not trying to be harsh, just telling you how someone would see you/your stats vs. your background if they knew nothing else about you. Just saying that being a "Slacker" is not perceived as being as bad as being an "Overprivileged Slacker", by society. Watch out!

Wow, from reading that and going to essentially the same hs as HW, you make me feel like a moron. Besides the fact that i dont litter my schedule with APs and Honors, I have a B+ average, but yeah, i wouldnt waste my time applying to Tufts, URoch, etc. But HWs stats are better then mine anyway. I wouldnt say it is pathetic to have a B in APUSH, APUSH is VERY hard in our district.

Dude, if I had a 3.14/3.37 GPA in my school, I would be ranked around the 25th percentile, and it's not even remarkably competitive (public high school)..... so you should probably thank the stars there are no ranks, heh heh.

But don't worry man, work harder and I'm sure you'll pull off 4.0s next year.

jPOD, I'm not trying to be mean. Just trying to be honest. Well, APUSH was hard in my school too. I'm a black kid, and I graduated from one of Atlanta's most elite schools a few days ago, and I had a 105 avg. in APUSH throughout the entire year (took it in the 11th grade), and I registered a '5' on the AP exam, so I can't cut you guys too much slack, because I've done it and seen it done. This is coming from a guy that got a full ride to Columbia, so I know what I'm talking about. jPod, I graduated the other week 9/565, so I can give an analysis of HWs stats (and yours too IF you post them). I actually know kids that graduated in my class that were sort of like HW, in the sense that they got like a 34 on the ACT, but they were ranked like 300 or something like that and got tons of Bs, Cs, etc.

'Go Kennesaw Mountain High School class of 2006! Take over the world!'

Well maybe we arent exactly like you? I know i'm not. I'd have no chance at a 34 on the ACT. I do ok. I've gotten one C in HS. I did average on the SATs, and havent taken the ACTs. I just think your assessment is a bit unfair to us.

American -match
Brandeis -match
George Washington - match
Tufts -reach/match
Pittsburgh -match
Rochester -match/reach

Brandeis isnt a match for him.

jPod, you're entitled to your thoughts. And, also, alot of things aren't fair. For example, life isn't always 'fair'. I'm just being honest. Peace!

If worst comes to worst, you get rejected by your local community college.

That's interesting. Brandeis would be a match, but Rochester a match/reach?

Tell you what. I'll tell you all what I think and you can analyze my predictions.

American University - Safety

Brandeis University - Slight Reach

George Washington University - Safe Match

Tufts University - Reach

University of Pittsburgh - Safety

University of Rochester - Match

jPod, you're entitled to your thoughts. And, also, alot of things aren't fair. For example, life isn't always 'fair'. I'm just being honest. Peace!

I didnt mean it like that. I meant that calling people like us who dont excell to some rediculous level like you did is utter crap.

To be honest, APUSH wasn't hard at all. Then again, I'm a history nerd, so it was easier for me.
