If you were accepted at USC....

in either BA of BFA, what is your background and what did you do at the audition?

Daughter admitted without audition to BA program. Strong student, good extracurriculars, mix of community theater and high school shows. Dance, and vocal music too.

I was admitted to the BFA program. I had strong extracurricular activities, rigorous academics (IB diploma candidate), decent grades (mostly A’s and B’s, but a C in math), and my essay was a George Orwell pastiche (so, creative writing) based on one of my own experiences.

My interview was relatively short, and simple, and in my audition I did a contemporary monologue. The monologue was not overly emotional (as in it wasn’t really angry, really funny, really sad etc). I was asked to do it twice, the second time they asked me to do it as if I was giving my audience a piece of advice. The auditors then asked me a couple of questions on my life based on what they saw in my file. I was sure I didn’t get in after my audition, because I didn’t feel it went so well  So that’s a lesson to all of you who are auditioning next year; sometimes they see something in you that you don’t notice yourself!

My daughter refused to audition (don’t ask) for the BFA. Accepted for the BA: very average grades, scores, excellent ecs, and a member of SAG.

Thanks for the feedback!

2 years ago my daughter did her classical piece and then was asked to do her contemporary piece, which they worked with her on. This year, the auditors requested to see one contemporary piece. My son did his and they did not work with him or ask to see another piece. Like Ellebud, both of my kids have been acting since age 9, with a lot of professional credits on their resume. Both are in the unions. However, this is not the norm. My daughter was the only kid in her class who was already in the union and I think she still is.

SO they are both in the theatre BA or BFA program? How do they like it?

Sorry to not be more clear - Daughter is a sophomore BFA - Son auditioned this year for the BFA program and was accepted. Daughter LOVES the program and the university. Quite certain son will choose USC over his other acceptances :)

Being in the BFA program, are her classes a mix of theatre and vocal or does it lean toward acting? Do BFA’s choose classes or is there a set curriculum?
