I hear a lot about how you can get a better undergraduate education at good LACs where they are devoted to teaching and classes are smaller and more personal. But if you were accepted to both a top Ivy and some top LACs, would you really turn down the Ivy? Or are we just consoling ourselves with "second best" when we talk up the LACs?

Supportivemom: This topic has been discussed in depth on here for several years. There are, of course, lots of different opinions out there, but ultimately, it depends on your kid, not what everyone else thinks. (And plenty of kids turn down Ivies for money at other schools.) Here's wishing everyone broad choices. :)

DD did, and DS would--not for money, but for reasons to do with "fit". It's a very individual thing, and maybe they are heavily influenced by their LAC grad parents. Also, most of their peers would do the exact opposite (choose the HYPSM over the LAC)--and maybe that's also part of the appeal:)
