If you were the dean of admissions for NYU, will you accept me?

Hello.

My name is Kyle, and I am a prospective NYU student living in Brooklyn, New York. I am currently a Junior.

I will take my SAT I on June 4th, and I will retake SAT II: Math 1C, and American History. I am considering to sign up for Sat II: Lit. or Sat II: World History.

My SAT I range, as per Princeton Review Diagnostics, are 630 math, 570 verbal and 530 writing. Hopefully, I will do better on the actual test.

Extracurricular Activities:

-Mock Trials (leading attorney)
-Moot Court
-Internship @ Lawfirm in the city
-Swimming Team (Fresh, Soph, Senior years)
-Football Tream (Frosh)
-Tennis Team (Frosh and Senior)
-MEMBER OFARISTA HONOR SOCIETY
-Enviro-thon (Science competition//Freshman year)
-Worked for an eye doctor (for a few weeks -- perhaps he could write me a recommendation)
-I will take college courses for High School students over the summer
-Key Club
-Editor-in-Chief of our Yearbook (Class of 2006)

My GPA: 3.2
AP courses taken and courses to be taken:

A.P. World History
A.P. American History
A.P. Physcology
A.P. English (will take senior year)
A.P. Government (will take senior year)
A.P. Economics (will take senior year)

I take the hardest courses at my school, with one exception: I avoid science courses.
My schedule is composed of ALL honor classes -- which my school offers.
For the record: MY school does not offer many courses; it is not competitive.

The low gpa is accredited to lack of motivation and interest in school throughout my high school career, until the end of sophmore year.

I may pull off a 3.3 or a 3.4 depending on how I fare with physics -- my worst subject.

Nonetheless, 3.2 is were I stand now.

I am planning to apply ED for Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Thank you,

Kyle

P.S. What colleges do you recommend for me -- an aspiring attorney? I am obsessed about law, so schools with a Mock Trial team would be a BIG plus.

EDIT: My average is an 87.8.

If I convert it to a GPA scale, I am not sure what it will be.

I'm really not sure. I mean, you're jumping all over the place with your EC's with little to no consistency. Your GPA is pretty low, and I hope that won't be your SAT score.

I'd say its fairly reasonable to try, maybe with a great SAT it'll be different. It's the EC and GPA that makes me go "eh..." for now.

My friend is wondering what his chances are. He wants to go to NYU btw.:
Private High-School(A recognized one)
2110
3.8 GPA (15/240)
AP Chem - No results yet, but he's hoping for a 4.
NHS(National Honor Society)
Key Club
Currently in 2nd year of Japanese
McIntyre Scholars
Jiu-Jitsu
Dragon Boat Festival(Summer Volunteering)
and just for fun a Counter-Strike Club where you need a 3.2 to enter and stay...haha, I know about the last one..
Overall his EC's need something more significant, but he's pretty busy every summer because our AP's start in summer.

Next year he has 6 AP's:
AP Physics C(E&M)
AP Calculus AB
AP English Literature
AP Computer Science: Java
AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics

ur friend is guarenteed admission g_han if its not stern, if he is applying to stern then it's more of a match/slight reach

They don't have a Dean of Admissions at NYU. They have a Provost, don't they?

-Mock Trials (leading attorney)
-Moot Court

what did you win? leading attorney means nothing if your team didn't advance to state.

yearbook is good. My GPA: 3.2 - is bad. That's a very low GPA, and though you didn't put rank, I'd assume it takes you out of the top 10%. That's also very bad. Rank is important! your reason for having a low GPA is does not excuse it; only is excused if like your mom died or something. (or got cancer)

P.S. What colleges do you recommend for me -- an aspiring attorney? I am obsessed about law, so schools with a Mock Trial team would be a BIG plus. - Yale? I dunno. You need to show awards in Mock Trial to show not only are you passionate about it, but you're good at it.

don't take all AP classes if you know you aren't gonna get As in all of them (judging from GPA, and probably easier course load in previous years) - esp. since all APs are hard for everyone. Drop the APs, get better grades, and work on app.

Your SAT I scores (at least predicted) are pretty low.

I take the hardest courses at my school, with one exception: I avoid science courses. - don't do that. You have to be well-rounded in terms of grades, and especially, you have to exhaust your high school curriculum - in all areas. (btw, I am also lawyer-type, and I hate math and science with a passion - i do debate for community college b/c i thought mock trial was boring - no offense, was pre-trial though - but still have to suffer through those classes and work....really hard for the grade)

I'd say reach.

I am amongst the highest ranked students in my school. I am currently unaware of my rank; but I am DEFINATELY top 25%. I would not be surprised if I was even in the top 15%. Top 10% is not that far-fetched, I would extremly pleased.

If a 3.2 GPA equals a 87.8, then the GPA is accurate.

Mock Trials:

We did not achieve anything noteworthy this year. This year...
For the record: I joined the Mock Trial team this year (Junior Year), for I was unaware that my school had such an organization.

I am financially disadvantaged. I used the money earned at the law firm to support my mother.

I do well in all my classes with the exception of Italian, and Physics. Physics really drags down my average. My average would be in the 90s if I had not taken that class.

Is Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU merely a reach? Or am I assured entry?

What about the University of Michigan?

u still need to get your GPA up. also, if SAT doesn't work out also try taking the ACT.

right now NYU is a reach
you have a better shot at michigan

keep workin hard and good luck, hope you get in

Thank you.

I am thankful the truth hit me now, as opposed to later in the future.
I learned my lesson.

What makes NYU a reach for me? What do I need to do to make it a match?

I'm sorry I was a bit...harsh in previous post. I was v. mad at my Great Expectations essay. Alas, no reason to take it out on you. I apologize.

Point this out: I am financially disadvantaged. I used the money earned at the law firm to support my mother.

Colleges take special notice of students who work during the school year, esp. if it is this kind of situation. It will tint your app a bit better.

NYU is a reach for you because of your GPA, although if your school reported rank that'd be better b/c it can be compared accurately. How many Bs do you have? Is it that tough of a school? You do say its not very competitive...so I'm confused there. If its b/c its a tough school, its fine. If its b/c its a not so great school...you should excel in that kind of school.

I think its hard to be unaware of the organizations at school; this will hurt you because they want long-term dedication to prove you are really passionate about it, not one of those people who likes things for a year or so and then drops it. Or that you started it for college apps b/c its junipr year. I really think you need to win something here. "We did not achieve anything noteworthy this year. This year..." This is necessary on multiple levels...if you're good, bring the whole team up with you and at least get qualify for state next year. It shows that a) you're not only passionate but good at it (they don't care if you're not good, b/c it doesn't mean anything for the uni), and b) you know what its like to really do law - if you are competitive it will have much more pressure, much more like real law situation.

I would a) drop the all APs unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you can get all As in each of them. and maybe even if you are absolutely sure. If you want to further validate your working-during-school position, take less, b/c u'll be working too. Apps are more important than APs senior year. b) get better GPA (see a) c) do well on SAT I d) win something in mock trial! e) do well on SAT II

Take Chemistry instead of Physics, or try harder. I did horrible in Calculus last semester, I worked my arse off and did a lot better this semester. Show improvement and initiative.

I really do not believe anyone can be assured entry to any school unless its like UCR. At this point NYU is a reach for the above reasons.

i wouldnt drop all APs, especially the ones in your strong areas.

My school is trash, period. I was pleasently surprised that we had such organizations (mock trials, moot court, etc).
For the record: I am also participating in next year's moot court.

I have a low GPA because I slacked off the first half of my high school career; I was immature.

I took Chemistry already. Physics is my last science course required to earn the highest high school diploma.
I will improve in Physics.
I do well in my AP courses. I recieve an 85 ONCE. Everything else was better.

I am studying vigoriously for my upcoming SAT I (June 4//October) and SAT II's (November//December).

i meant drop the course schedule of "all APs" not all APs period. SOrry about the confusion. :) And no matter what your previous experience, I'd err on the safe side. Besides, if you do well on APs, why is GPA so low? Does that mean you do worse in honors....? Once again...immaturity doesn't excuse slacking off...

It's not an excuse. It is the reason; I am merely explaining to you how I yielded such a low GPA in a non-competitive high school.

I did poorly in Physics this year. This class creates serious havoc on my average, believe me. Italian, also, needs extreme improvement. As for the rest of my subjects: up is the general direction.

Frosh and Soph: Sciences ruined my grades (not my strongest area), my lazyness, and the required computer science courses (since I was in a math/science program and I transfered to the english/history program for students who exceed in those subjects).

I look at this in a postive light:

I least I learned my lesson prior to college.

I value education highly and as of late, I am a workaholic. I am proud of it, too.
