If you were to get a D in a class, would you have to retake it in order to apply to UCs?

A friend of mine (junior) may earn a D in her Honors Pre-calculus class, and she was wondering whether it would make her ineligible to apply to UCs. I’ve heard that UC schools do not accept credit for grades lower than a C. Would she have to retake the class during the summer and make at least a C? Or is Pre-calculus not a required math credit? Thanks

Minimum math for UCs is geometry and algebra 2, so she would not be an automatic reject just based on that if she has geometry and algebra 2 completed with C or higher grades. However, the D grade will harm her GPA, and won’t look good when an admission reader is looking at her application.

As @ucbalumnus stated that the minimum Math classes required to satisfy the a-g course requirements is Algebra 1 and 2 along with Geometry but the UC’s recommend a 4th year a Math which would be Pre-calculus. Since the UC’s are so competitive, a 4th year is really necessary to make you a compeitive applicant. It is highly unlikely that an applicant has a decent chance of an acceptance at the majority of the UC’s with a D on their transcript. They should repeat the class as stated here to help with their GPA since UC’s are very GPA focused.

Required “a-g” courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Courses in which grades of D/F are earned may be repeated. There is no limitation on the number of times a course can be repeated. The first instance of grade C or better will be used in the GPA calculation.

However, getting a D grade in 11th grade means no opportunity except summer to replace it with a higher grade in a repeat of the course for a UC application made during 12th grade.

I thought you could not get lower than a C to be admitted into a UC.

“Earn a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better (3.4 if you’re a nonresident) in these courses with no grade lower than a C.”

D’s and F’s in a-g courses can be repeated and with new grade replacing an D/F as stated on the CSU/UC a-g comparison matrix that @ucbalumnus linked on post #1, however it needs to be the exact class for the retake.
