Why is it stated that if you complete IGETC, there is no need to take additional lower-division general education courses at the university, but you still have to do the american history and institutions requirement? How come the AHI isn't part of the IGETC? Because that would make a lot more sense.....

Because you DO NOT have to do AHI requirement if you do IGETC.

Thanks for the response.

But do you still have to do the AHI for the Cal State system? (if IGETC is completed)

You can use IGETC for CSU, but must take the extra classes required for CSU, such as Political Science and Speech. There is actually another sheet of recommended classes specifically for CSU. I followed that one, mostly, and met all IGETC requirements plus the AH&I requirement (by taking Poli Sci for CSU). I cross-referenced the two different sheets to make sure I was on track for both UC and CSU.

So I checked berkeley's website again and found this:

from http://teaching.berkeley.edu/ahi/faq.html:

* As a community college transfer student I satisfied the IGETC requirements. Does this mean I have automatically satisfied my AH&I requirements?

No. Unless you passed one of the approved courses at other colleges, you have not satisfied the AH&I requirements. Check with the AH&I Office to find out what courses are approved at the community college you attended before you transferred to UC Berkeley. (Some transfer students did the necessary work in high school. See FAQ #4 above.)*

So it looks like I still have to do it since I didn't even go to high school.

The best thing to do is check your school's agreement with Berkeley on assist.org. You may have already satisfied the requirement without knowing it. After choosing your CCC and UC Berkeley, there is a link under "By Major" called ">Information - American History and Institutions Requirement".

TheFisher, did you do this?...

By passing with a grade of C or P or better, one quarter or semester of a transferable course in basic U.S. history or U.S. government at a college or university before entering Berkeley. Inquiries about which transfer courses satisfy the requirements should be directed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 110 Sproul Hall. Students may also go to Assist.org to find California community college courses that have been approved to satisfy the American History and American Institutions requirements. NOTE: Students who take and pass one approved course before entering Berkeley will satisfy both AH&I requirements.

no i havent.
